    64 Hubcap question

    Guys;
    What is the real scoop on the 64 Caps. Frosted, Frosted partially, or all polished. My car is about SN 5500.
    Thanks.

    Ken according to the JM about vin 7760 caps were frosted on the inner part of cap and after they reversed the frosted to the outter lip.

      Ken,

      A 64 coupe, #8763, had 1st design/polished covers. We bought the car brand new in early 64. (I removed the covers immediately)

        Guys;
        I did read the current JM, but found it not clear. It first states that they were all polished with no frosting, then goes on to talk about SN's and frosting. Can someone clearify it in easy terms.
        Thanks.

          Here's 2-photos that may help. Early cover on the left, late cover on the right. The change occurred around serial number 7600.

            I'm curious as to where you are getting this information?

              Tom Falconer's The Restorer's Guide says the change occurred around serial number 7600. The JG says it was around 7760.

                Hank,

                As I mentioned in my previous post, our new 64 coupe, #8763, definitely had the 1st design covers. The info should be updated to show this.

                I'll see if I can find a picture of the new car with these ugly covers on it. Most of the pictures that I have of the car are without covers.

                If the "Restorers Guide" information comes from the 64 AIM, folks have to understand that the change dates in these manuals is seldom the same date that the change actually occured on the St Louis assembly line.

                  Thanks, Michael. Certainly there are errors with some of the published data on many topics. Perhaps the best source is indeed documented photos and paper trails.

                  Thanks,

                  Hank

                    Mike;
                    Do I understant correctly that your car had all polished caps, no frosting?
                    Thanks

                      Ken,

                      Yes, that's correct. My car had the early polished covers. (I think there was a narrow band of silver around the outer portion)

                      I just noticed that the photos/descriptions in Hank's post are reversed. Polished is 1st design and satin coated is 2nd design.

                        Just to confirm, Hanks posting had the hubcaps swapped....the polished centers are early first production, the painted centers are later production....It is conceivable that polished caps are on VIN 87XX that is only 7 days of production past the JG stated VIN....it would be nice to find documented evidence.....a picture on day of delivery would be nice.

                          Sorry for the typo - the first design (early cover) with the polished center is the LEFT photo, and the second design (late cover) with the frosted center is the RIGHT photo. I've edited the post in question.

                          Need to use those reading glasses more often.
