Michael, your probably right. Some owner prior to me would have to get a door from an early wreck. The door was crazed and pieces missing. I'm just not sure why someone would put an older, poor quality door on the car.

      Harry,

I was thinking about the possibility of an early IP door on a later car.
Not only the 1st design door and lock cyl would be required but also, I think the retainer is different?
It would be confusing on the assembly line if most cars got the early door and related components but few others got the later design.

The big item would be the key/coded lock set. (doors, ignition, IP door) Since all of the locks use the same key, there would have to be a unique set for the few random late cars that received the early IP door and lock cyl.

There was one key when I got the car, but locksmiths have been around a long time. I doubt it came on the car, but who knows. Also, it had the correct retainer???

I thought I'd revive this, as I just stumbled on an old photo of car 23. The glove box clearly shows the keyhole style lock, proving you guys are correct in stating that early cars had that style

            Michael,

That looks a bit different than regular early production locks. It appears to be flush mounted instead of inset, or seated on the 2nd surface. I suppose almost anything is possible for those first 25 pilot line cars.

The first picture is a close up from a 1963 issue of Road & Track magazine. It shows the lock on a brand new early production car. This car was probably an October 62 build.

The second pic may be a better shot that shows the inset of the lock bezel on a November 62 car. There's actually a gap between the plastic face of the door and the bezel of the lock.

Nice pics, Michael. My blue car's lock is identical to what you posted.

You're right, the lock in my pic looks different than either of the ones used in production.

              Thanks,
