Motor oil
Looking for help picking a motor oil to run in my original L79 motor. I just finished the first 500 miles after a rebuilt. Weight, conventional, synthetic? Any help is appreciated. Speed shops are trying to sell me 20-50, I think it is to heavy.

Re: Motor oil
I too use the 15wx40 Rotella T in my 63 L-76 SHP. I wanted to go to the 10wx30 for the cool months and had heard "Advance Auto Parts" would/did order it for some of the other TDB users. Ihave a store a couple blocks from my house so I stopped in to check, and low and behold, they had as much 10wx30 on the shelf as 15wx40. So, I picked up to gallon jugs for my next oil change.
For me, the heavier oil was running a bit too high on pressure and I was experiencing a few minor leaks. I hope the lighter weight oil may work out better - at least in the cooler months down here in Florida.

Re: Motor oil
Just the other day I encountered for the first time, and bought, a gallon of Valvoline Cummins-approved synthetic that is CI-4 and CI-4 Plus rated and is 5W-40. Though it was espensive at about $30 I bought it because I was remembering (maybe in error) that CI-4 has a more reliable content of zinc than CJ-4. I also thought that maybe the 5W would be easier on a cold, cranking motor. Thoughts?- Top
