    Motor oil

Looking for help picking a motor oil to run in my original L79 motor. I just finished the first 500 miles after a rebuilt. Weight, conventional, synthetic? Any help is appreciated. Speed shops are trying to sell me 20-50, I think it is to heavy.

Look Here, there's a good article from Duke William about oil for vintage engines

      Re: Motor oil

I have been running Shell Rotella 15W40 in all of my old Corvettes for many years with no issues.

Oil is one subject you will never get a consensus on. Duke's article is very informative.

I am also using Shell Rotella 15W40 in my original owner 68 L79. Engine has not been rebuilt. When I started using Rotella I could get 10W30, don't see it on the shelves anymore where I shop.

I too use the 15wx40 Rotella T in my 63 L-76 SHP. I wanted to go to the 10wx30 for the cool months and had heard "Advance Auto Parts" would/did order it for some of the other TDB users. Ihave a store a couple blocks from my house so I stopped in to check, and low and behold, they had as much 10wx30 on the shelf as 15wx40. So, I picked up to gallon jugs for my next oil change.

For me, the heavier oil was running a bit too high on pressure and I was experiencing a few minor leaks. I hope the lighter weight oil may work out better - at least in the cooler months down here in Florida.

No need to go to a speed shop 'boutique' to buy oil. Walmart carries Rotella.

What's with this Rotella obsession? It's far from being the only game in town.

It's the only brand that many of us can find without a special order.

Most auto parts stores I go to stock Delo, Delvac, and Rotella, plus a house brand... same with Walmart, but Costco only carries Delo.

I just buy the least expensive CJ-4 I can conveniently find.

Just the other day I encountered for the first time, and bought, a gallon of Valvoline Cummins-approved synthetic that is CI-4 and CI-4 Plus rated and is 5W-40. Though it was espensive at about $30 I bought it because I was remembering (maybe in error) that CI-4 has a more reliable content of zinc than CJ-4. I also thought that maybe the 5W would be easier on a cold, cranking motor. Thoughts?

Thanks for all of the reply's. Like Paul my oil presure is a kind of high, maybe still breakin in. I will try the 10-30, Retolla seems very popular they should pay you royalties

Ditto, right now Motorcraft is the cheapest.

I ending up with Joe Gibbs Driven 10-30w conventional. Not the cheapest, but worth it to me, $9 a quart at local speed shop. Still plenty of oil presure, 40-50 psi at idle. I only have around 400 miles on a rebuilt engine.

I use Brad Penn 30 weight in my 62 for under $6.00 a qt. No problems with oil pressure on my P.V. this summer.
