i have never seen a top bushing wear as the only side thrust on it is from the points and if the dist is a TI there is no side thrust. the bottom bushing see a lot more side load from the oil pump

You have seen far less distributors than I thought you have if you haven't run across a few worn bushings on the top side.

What did the factory use? Perma-lube?? It been forty plus years for some of those distributors.

Hey Joe,

Pressurized oil is a good idea for the lower bearing. What about the upper bearing? It turns at the same rpm as the lower bearing. How is pressurized oil getting to the upper bearing when there is a hole in the housing the size of a dime (large anyway) ?

You think maybe oiling the wick at the top in the housing will keep it lubed for maybe say 100,000 miles or more?

Oilite should be more than sufficient for the upper bushing. Think about the crankshaft pilot bushing as being analogous. The more I look, the more I see that the failure rate of upper as compared to lower is in the 10-20% range.

Trying to ensure perfect alignment appears to me to be a futile and EXPENSIVE solution, as pressurized oiling is a free, and foolproof solution. A simple and profitable modification.

remember i was working on them when they were nearly new not 50+ years old. i would guess that lube they used for the top bushing under that plastic cover got dryer than a camels fart in 40 years.
