The '69 L36 I recently purchased is sans the original gas cap. I see a nice one on ebay with the correct "SM" logo and paper seal. It's NOS in the original box - part number 3952708. This is the same part number as in the aim. two questions, 1) Is 3952708 the correct part number of the original gas cap for an early production '69 (#3407), 2) Is the part number stamped into the original gas cap?

GM #3952708 is the correct part number for the 1969 cap. Is it possible that very early 1969's used 1968 caps? Yes, it's possible but I really doubt it.
I do not know the difference between the late 1968 cap, GM #3921689, and the 1969 cap. The early 1968 cap (which was the same as 64-67) differed only in that it used a cellulosic (paper)-type gasket whereas the 1969 cap used a neoprene gasket. I don't know what type of gasket the 3921689 used. Anyone out there have a later 1968 with what they believe to be the original gas cap?
As far as part numbers appearing on the cap go, I've never seen a part number on any 1963-74 gas cap. Some of the 1975+ caps had them, though. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
