    Lacquer swirl marks

My '67 was recently (maybe four years ago) repainted with original type lacquer paint. I was looking at it closely in very bright sunlight and swirls marks are visible. Not sure what I can do about that, but would like suggestions if there are any. I have not waxed it, just used some detailing spray over the years to keep it clean, and the judges at the regional really liked it, but I would like to see if I can remove or lessen those swirl marks. Thanks for any tips.

if you want to fix it by hand i would use meguiars hand polish. it has no wax or silicone in it. just pure polish. you have to rub it in with one towel and wipe off with another. use microfiber towels. this is the only remedy that worked on my black cars.
if the swirls are deeper, then a machine polish may be needed such as with a dual action polisher with a foam pad. worst case may be a rotary buffer but make sure you are familar with it or highly trust someone else to use it on your car.
    i hope this helps.
    take care,

Most of you major finish products manufacturers have products that will do this. I am about 20 years behind, but DuPont had a white and a pink product that did a wonderful job of removing swirl marks.

Dick, Do you remember the old Pink 3M Fill & Glaze. That stuff was awesome on lacquer paint.

I have used Meguiars products for years. They have a swirl remover that works very well, they refer to it as #9. For best result use an orbital buffer with a polishing pad.

For polish I love what Meguiars #7 does on lacquer. I use it before any show with great results.

I remember Fill & Glaze. Best product of it's time. Then they came out with a white product, number escapes me. I have found that all that kind of work is in my past. Too much joint pain after polishing and/or waxing a vehicle

I agree with Tom 100%. The Meguiar's #9 will get you where you want to be.

I did try the 3M Imperial Hand Glaze, and it didn't touch the marks, so I will try #9.

Take a look at http://www.autopia-carcare.com/ in the How To section.
Remember you are slowly removing the scratches (no filling them). Now with a lot of work you can make it look like glass, naturally with a deduction for that, but looks sooo good.

3M pink smells like peppermint, pn 5976 - still some in basement! Good stuff.

My recommendation is # 7. When you use it go in all directions in a straight back and forth motion. Work small sections at a time. Doing it by hand , yes it is labor intensives but well worth it in the long rung to get rid of the swirl marks

I always used Meguiar's M3 and then H7 sealer and it worked great.

One time I painted a car black lacquer and applied the H7 sealer to soon and the lacquer cracked up becaues of trapped solvents, be careful here..

                        Dick,

                        Would that be a 3M product called Finess-It, #05928?

Bingo! I was not at the office today and could not look it up. I still have a bottle (hope it has not dried up)

Great stuff for hand or machine. I've been using it for a LONG time. I just bought another bottle a few months ago.

Now 3M has 3M Finesse-It II Glaze 3M 05928. Last year I found an old container of Fill & Glaze packed away in a plastic tote. Good thing it was in a plastic tote because the container had leaked and most of it was all over the place. IIRC I bought it in the late 70's.
