    VIN Resurection

I have a 1982 coupe. I have the last nine digits of my VIN stamped on my engine and they match the "hidden" VIN derivitive on the frame. I want to find out the first 8 characters of the VIN. Is this hard to do or do I just follow the normal VIN code listed in the black book???
    Thanks

Hopefully, if you look at the A pillar through the windshield on the driver's side, you have a VIN tag with the entire number sequence.

I just need to know if "rebuilding" the VIN using the last 9 digits is a reasonable method of getting the correct number to register it. I already know its not stolen.

All but one of the characters is predictable based on the black book approach to VINs. One of the missing characters in your VIN is a generated 'check digit' that is calculated by a somewhat obscure formula that was written about in the Restorer magazine many years ago. If someone has it handy, it can be used to figure out the missing character or search on the restorer disc for the article by John Amgwert.

What about the "vehicle certification label" that typically is glued to the driver's side door jamb? Not there?

              Does this 82 have a title ?

                    Michael,

Tom's asking if the title shows the VIN, which it should. What does it say? Is it a clear or salvage title?

Thanks for all the support gentlemen. I will definetly use the formula to get the check digit correct and then register it properly. Sorry for the lack of response but due to my particular set of circumstances this is the only way I can "rebuild" the VIN.
