1963 steel wheel date code error?

Can anyone provide assistance deciphering an unusual code on my 1963 Corvette steel wheel? The wheel has all the right characteristics: sloped backside, nubs, no hole in the spider area, The KH logo, and the 15x5.5K stamping... but instead of the month/year code like the other 4 wheels, it just has 8. Just the number 8!

I have read postings for some code errors like 6-59, but didn't find anything like this. Could this be another date code error? Or does someone know otherwise?? Thanks, Dan

Back in the early 1990's I had an original 63-64 wheel dated "6" and "59" (June 1959) which was obviously a stamping error. I also saw a "6 59" 63-64 Corvette wheel at Fall Carlisle in 2004.

I have three 65-66 Corvette wheels that are stamped "6" (or possibly "9") without the 2-digit year.

I have one 63 wheel that you can only see the 63. Must have been a poor stamp for the month. On all wheels that are clear, the month and the year are always upside down from each other.

Dan, it could be that your wheel only had the month stamped into it. The error was no year stamped. If the 8 stamp stands for August then the date stamp should be 62 for your 1963.

OK, I really wanted to be sure the wheel was not a later issue or somehow incorrect for a 63 model. I just bought this wheel, my fifth and final, and it looks identical to the four others dated 1/63 and 2/63.

Thank you for the replies! This Tech Discussion is an invaluable resource for learning about these wheels. It is amazing how much these wheels cost now and I did not want to make a very costly mistake!

            Dan,

I have four 63 wheels and I am looking for my fifth wheel also.

Two of the wheels have no date stamp but they are definately 63 wheels. One odd thing on these two wheels is that the GM stamp that's on the raised boss by the lug nut holes is turned side ways.

I don't think it means anything I just wanted to report my findings.

              Timothy,

Thanks for the information - I think I've read every possible post on these wheels, and according to members, yours without dates and 90 degree offset GM may be the earliest versions known. Let me know if you want a source for 1 wheel. Not cheap. I should have searched/bought these 25 years ago when I bought the car!

The 63-64 Corvette wheels have always been hard to find but it was a lot easier to find them back in the 1980's when most people had no clue how to identify them. I found a pair of nice 63 wheels for $10 each at Carlisle because the seller thought they were just standard Chevy wheels. I also found nice 63-64 wheel and a nice 65-66 wheel ($20 each) at a junkyard near Los Angeles back in 1987 while on vacation just before I took my 4-year old son to Disneyland.
