    Paint on engine stamp pad

I was able to removes the majority of the paint off the engine stamp pad. There is still some orange paint in the actual numbers.

Do I need to try to remove this paint for judging or is it ok to have paint in the numbers itself?

I have judged a lot of 1968 to 1972s with paint in the numbers and that alone doesn't bother me. I am not sure other judges would take the same point of view, so it will be interesting to0 see what others have to say.

Put lacquer thinner on a new toothbrush and scrub and it should come out.

Re: Paint on engine stamp pad

I've read several statements regarding supposedly original un-repainted engines and pads still having traces of paint in the numbers.

If the engine was painted before the machine code was stamped how would the paint get into the numbers? If the pad was covered during the painting, then this would not be possible. If the pad was wiped with a rag to clean it prior to stamping, again how would paint get in the depressions?

If on the other hand the pad was stamped prior to painting, then the 'wiping' method could allow some paint to remain.

Irrespective of the foregoing, the paint was dry and the pad 'clean' by the time the engine was installed in the car. How does paint get into the VIN derivative?

Why "new"? Can I put it right back in the bathroom holder or do ya think she'll smell it next morning when she grabs it?

(If it wan't Jeff that offered this, I probably wouldn't have posted this smart ### comment)

Many owners repaint the engine and or touch it up with orange spray can paint. I could see it would be quite easy to get paint where one does not intend it to be.

As far as I know this is a completely original engine bay so I don't think the paint was ever redone. The pad was covered in a light layer of paint when I bought the car.

Yes, but in his post Michael referenced "supposedly original un-repainted engines".

If it is completely original it is still not typical of 1969 to have had the pad painted. That said I have seen "errors" which I am sure were done by the factory. If that is your case you should have left it alone -- but then it is too late to put that toothpaste back in the tube.

BTW: Perhaps I have inexpensive tooth brushes -- my dentist, who is a member of NCRS, gives them to me -- but lacquer thinner melts my tooth brushes. If yours does not melt from lacquer thinner please post the brand so I can quit using my old discards and perhaps upgrade my dental program in the process.

The engine plant stamping was done before the engine was painted, and the assembly plant only needed to clean half the pad for stamping the VIN on a clean surface. It seems to me that an original engine would have paint on the Tonowanda or Flint characters and no paint on the VIN characters even though this is not what NCRS judges demand.

Don't know about 69 but in 65, there was no trace of paint anywhere on the pad or in the stamps. Here's a 65 pad as it came from the factory.

How does it look? Still need to clean up the engine a bit of the grease and change the valve cover gaskets.
