    Correct Battery-where to purchase?

I would like to buy a correct replacement battery for judging. I see that several companies sell them, but before i spend a bunch of money on a battery that will only be used for judging, i would like to make sure i buy the correct one that will not receive a point deduction.

I apologize in advance for posting such simple questions, but i did perform an advanced search and did not come up with the info i needed.

So, where should i purchase a correct reproduction battery for judging purposes.

    Thanks

This subject is one of great controversy, as this thread shows for the '66 tar top:

    https://www.forums.ncrs.org/showthread.php?t=90447

I have always used Antique Auto Battery, who makes the batteries for Restoration Battery, but some think you will get points deducted based on their experience, and thus go to great pains to reproduce a tar top that has a modern battery inside.

I've seen the process for removing the guts of an original battery. I value my face and hands, so i think i will pass on that procedure and just take a deduction.

You have to draw the line somewhere. Gutting a battery is way over the line in my opinion.

I purchased my reproduction tar top battery for my 1954 from Antique Auto Battery.

The key is to CAREFULLY follow the instructions on filling & charging your new "antique" battery. Probably the most important step is not to overfill the battery with battery acid.

i put mine on a battery tender once per week. I have had it in service about 8 months, and so far I am very pleased with the look of the product and how it has performed.

Christopher, I didn't see in your post what year car/battery you are thinking of when posting (designs evolved) but I can say that my C3's Restoration Battery is in its 5th year with never an issue. It cost me only 1 of 25 originality points (parting lines on top) at this summer's national convention judging and has never disappointed me in service. I keep it disconnected and on a Battery Tender Plus when not in use.

Same experiece with Restoration Battery's product. I have it installed in a '72 and use a Battery Tender Plus, also, when the car is in storage.

Is there any that sells a battery that looks the same but is like a Optima battery?

As far as I know the only batteries that look like the original are "maintenance free" types, not the absorbed glass mat type like Optima. However, I have 4 of the Antique Auto Batteries (who makes Restoration Batteries) and have had no problems over the 4 years they have been in as long as you keep them charged.

And here is the manufacturer's website:

This shows the GM batteries they make, for Restoration Battery and others.

I can't be sure, but I recall Tom at Restoration Battery was less expensive and/or you could deal a little.

                            Just a thought.

What do you mean? Are you saying just that you wouldn't do it or are you saying others shouldn't do it?
