    66 frame marks

i found some frame chalk marks on the front driver's side frame under the radiator support that have a white mark and an orange shade mark in between the white marks. i am familar with the body shim markings being white but what would these be?

Shims were placed at this location as well. Unless someone has changed the shim count, this should be the number of shims you'll find at this location.

i understand the shim count relating to the chalk marks. but i dont recognize the orange/yellowish mark in between the white marks. i thought all chalk marks were the same white color. this is an ao smith body. maybe they are different from st louis ?

I have seen orange to signify 5 shims so if you have 2 white and 1 orange you shouold have 7 shims welded to the fron frame.

          Matt -

Frame shim marks were measured and applied on the Frame Line at St. Louis, several hours before the body met the frame; didn't matter which plant the body came from.

            Hi Matt,

I agree with Rich. I've always been told an orange crayon strike represents 5 shims. When I removed the front bumper braces way back when off my A.O. Smith '65 #14xxx convertible I found an orange and 2 or 3 white crayon strikes there. It all jived with the shim count.
