Member thoughts about our cars value

    Happy New Year all.
Just sitting around and wanted to bounce off you folks YOUR thoughts about our cars recent Value/devaluation. Obviously whatever $$ we had in stocks etc. has taken a huge hit over the past 4 Yrs. + , but I wanted your thoughts about how it has hurt the valuation of our cars. In my case , my 67 390 HP Roadster was probably valued @ over 100K (in it's frame off restored condition) 4+ Yrs. ago , but now I hear that potentially some of the "Pizzaz" has gone out of them in regards to their current value in todays market.

It also seems that cars like a 63 S/W or 65 Fuelie are even stronger $$ than the 67's. Just wanted to see what your thoughts were ?

My thoughts? These are toys, not investments. If you look at it this way when buying or selling, who cares what their value may or may not be in the future if you're having fun. You pay $70K for a new Corvette that 4 years later is only worth half that amount. Cars should never be looked at as an investment and those that do are probably off in a corner crying and sucking their thumbs.

Re: Member thoughts about our cars value

Some are into Corvettes only for the money. Others of us really like the cars and couldn't care less about selling. My observations indicate other car groups such as the 55-57 Chevy guys are far less interest in the profit as seen in the Corvette world. Corvette guys place too much value in Big Blocks and high optioned rare examples than do the rest of the car world. Just look at the flight rows and the lack of mid year small blocks. The only other group that exhibits the lust for high dollar cars are the Hemi people.

In todays street world just understand one thing, "It takes a real good strong running big block to take out a small block."

            Fred,
I do too, there is a built aluminum head 427 in my 57 Nomad. Passes a lot of cars but no gas stations! My vettes are all SB's.

I like your style Gene. I went out this morning for a drunk free run of the roads. I would have loved to run into a big block. My L-76 was running so sweet with my new jetting, pulling redline in 1, 2, and 3 with no sweat, that it took the place of at least a half hour on the tread mill (I really need to wear my wrist heart rate monitor). The only thing challenging me for road space this morning were a couple of Sandhill Cranes (about 4 to 5 feet tall), and a little jog in fourth gear above the century mark got us past them.

I never think much of the value of my 63 except when I fly by 5500 rpm (the self imposed limit I learned from Duke who fears rod failure). It is just too much fun!

Auctions, vanity, and greed drove the price of these cars far higher than they should have been. A 390/427 for example should never have been priced 20 to 50 thousand more than a compairable small block. A 390 wouldn't fall out of a tree compaired to a good hi po small block. Blame Barrett Jackson ,good marketing ,and naive buyers. This is a perfect example of buy high sell low investing. You're also running out of baby boomers with fat wallets.

I guess I came across wrong in my 1st note to you guys. After God , Family & Friends ----my LOVE of my 2 mid Years is WAAAY up there !! I only wanted to get some thoughts from you folks because as of late I realize that I simply love the Corvette "Coupe" body style MUCH more than the style ( roof wise) of my Roadster. They are both beautiful in their own ways , but for ME given the choice I prefer the coupe body style more. Thats IT !
Having said that I was thinking lately about selling my Roadster & looking for a 65 Fuelie Coupe. So----I wanted some of your feedback on what sort of #'s I should be looking at/for as far as selling my car & finding a 65 in as original & nice condition as my 67--------------Thats all---------SO---what do you think ??------------I really do love these cars & this hobby for the Fun I get out of it------Its NOT a business for me------I's a love for the hobby & the Friends I make.

Fred, I watch the market pretty close. CONDITION is so important when it comes to value, but that said I agree that 427 big block converible 67 Corvettes were overpriced in 2006-08 era. Still great cars, but I am partial to Rochester Fuel Injection cars, especially 57's and 65's. I think you may need a few $$$ added to your convertible for a really nice 65 fuelie coupe, but again CONDITION will tell all. Send me a PM, and I will share where a few bones are buried.
Over 80 Corvettes of fun ! Love Rochester Fuel Injection 57-65 cars. Love CORVETTE RACE CARS

These are not retirement plans, they're sports cars. Drive and enjoy them.

Hmmm, You are driving a different 390 than mine. The only thing making a SB even comparable is the tires. Neither will hook up.

                          Yeah! You tell 'em Wayne!

When I bought my 390hp convertible way back when (before her eternal restoration), she could pull tree stumps out of the ground. It's all about the torque!

I'm not so concerned about the market value of my Vettes but to their longegivity on the current road the "Greenies" are taking this country down. Wasn't it Al Gore who wanted to crush all classic cars due to emissions? Sometimes I wonder if I'm pouring money into a beauty that I'll have to park one day.
