    69 Tire Options

I have an early production (#3704) 427/390 '69. It needs new tires for judging. I'm trying to determine which options would have been available on an early October-68 production car. It is my understanding that PU9 (Raised White letter) weren't available until late '69 - at least for the Goodyear Speedway Wide Tread Bias-Ply tires with RWL.

How about the Firestone Wide Oval? When were these first available?

Were PT6 (Red Stripe) and/or PT7 (White Stripe) available the entire production year?

    Thanx

I believe the black wall, red stripe, or white stripe would be appropriate. What's on the tank sticker?

I don't have the build sheet in hand and don't plan to do a frame off resto before having the car judged for the first time.

Floyd, your last response makes me think you may be more interested in judging score than looks. If that is the case blackwall Goodyears will result in the least deduction, although if appropriate for your car (and I don't know if they are) Goodyear RWL would likely be the same deduction. The available Firestones are not OEM (in spite of what the ads imply) and will result in a greater deduction than the Goodyears. In any case you will want to have an original spare (it doesn't have to match the road tires) for the least deduction as the spare is judged separately.

If all that sounds confusing check your copy of the NCRS Judging Reference Manual (8Th Edition, as amended, is the latest).

Kellsey tire make the best reproduction tire/ Goodyear F70/15. They have them available in RWL, red stripe and white stripe.

Please remember these are nylon ply tires, remember the old flat spots! They are great for showing but terrible for everyday driving.

            Terry,

You are correct. For these tires I am more interested in points than look. However, If I can have both (i.e. max points with the look I prefer), then all the better. You have answered my question. I prefer the RWL's but that would probably cost me 4 more points than the blackwalls since RWL's were not available in Oct '68. So I'll go with the reproduction Goodyear Speedway Wide Tread Bias-Ply's.

Yep. These are going to be my "show" tires. I will mount them on my original rims. For driving, I plan on getting a set of the repoduction Firestione Wide Oval Radials. Modern tire with that "period correct" look. I still remember the advertising for the Wide Ovals and how "groovey" we thought they looked.

If you're after maximum points then find 4 originals. You can't drive further than your trailer to the showfield but they will get maximum points.
