    What is the coating on my 82's frame?

    The coating is not paint, it seems to be a black oily wax that doesn't dry. It was evidently applied before any of the chassis parts and other equipment was installed.

      It's an asphaltic-based coating that was applied at the A.O. Smith frame manufacturing plant in Milwaukee, WI. It dries by simple evaporation of the solvent and cam be re-solublized by many organic solvents.

              Reuben, a few years ago there were at leats two vendors who stocked a similar asphaltic-type coating. One was ZIP Corvette Supply, and I think the other was Corvette Central.

              Sorry, but I don't know if others such as Dr. Rebuild or Long Island stock the stuff....
