    1960 Distributor wick

I found a correct distributor for my car and am in the process of rebuilding it, I found the wick is gone. There is a new tube available but it is not the correct type, mine is the short oiler sticking out the side. Has anyone made a wick if so how long should it be, should it just touch the shaft.
Also how effective is the in the first place the manual says to service every 1000 miles, but I cannot imagine that is done especially with the ignintion shielding in place. Any ideas suggestions would be helpful.
