Story on finding docs, history of your car: Do you have one?

John Seeley recently posted a story about his unbelievable luck through posting his car on the C2 Registry. Some posters on his thread said "never give up." You need to start looking and then never give up. Here are two examples of why you don't quit looking that happened to me, written as short as I can. I know there are other great stories out there, so feel free to add them here. Maybe we can learn some new tricks to looking.

First story: I once bought a roach of a 67 435 convertible with OM and but no docs. I told my good Corvette friend about it. He had a small data base of separated motors, trans, docs etc. he developed over the years. He checked my vin against his data base and found a letter a man wrote to him over ten years before saying his friend had docs for that vin. After a few phone calls, I found the friend who was the first owner, no less, and who had the window sticker and 20+ pieces of paper us NCRS guys love. On top of that, my son worked with him in the same building in DC.

Then, there was the 67 435 coupe I bought in 2009. PJ had owned the car since 1975 and was dying of cancer. A friend lived near PJ and told me of the car. He handled the whole purchase for me, so I never met PJ. Then PJ died the next month from his cancer. I began searching for PJ's friends....many phone calls, emails and posts on forums. Then some luck. I found PJ's closest two buddies. Then I found PJ's daughter who lived in another state and was settling his estate. I was told the original motor to my car was in PJ's 66 Biscayne. I made the 180 mile trip to PJ's home but it was not the original motor...was a 1969 CE for it though. But, it got better. The daughter first invited me to look at her father's stuff in two garages and the house. That got me 50+ NOS parts PJ had laying around in his garages for the car he never put on it. I also found five original parts to my car laying on the work benches. But the real luck was when she asked me into his kitchen. It was a mess (bachelor) full of books and magazines piled on the floor and chairs. I was hardly interested in that stuff, but decided to look around. I pulled a box from under the kitchen table with a door panel on top and there, with several others, was the original owner's packet for my car including POP, owners manual, radio guide, trim ring card and V.V. Cooke warranty card!! If I had not called, if I had not made the trip, that would have been thrown away. From that, I found the first owner and a great story including how my car got a CE block!

It can't be said enough, never stop looking, asking, calling, investigating, chasing....

Here is what I got under the kitchen table....

Re: Story on finding docs, history of your car: Do you have one?

The guy I bought my 70 from said he only knew the name of the guy he bought it from, but did not know where that guy was now. I did internet searches and sent out letters and made phone calls for about year or so, and eventually I found that second-to-last owner but he told me he knew nothing about the car's history. Then, he called me back and said he had one picture of the car when he bought it, and it had a barely legible state license plate.

So, I wrote to that state's DMV and despite their forms saying their records didn't go back more than 10-15 years I got a redacted page with one line on it with a name from the mid-70s. After a few phone calls I found the second owners, who got me in touch with first owners who told me the whole history of the car and sent me many pictures of the car when it was brand new, and throughout its life. I kept all of these past owners up to date on what was going on with car including each meet leading to it getting the Duntov.

Then one day out of the blue the second owners called me and said they had a "surprise" coming in the mail but wouldn't tell me what it was. I dared hope it was one piece of documentation, but it was the motherload - warranty book with POP, owner's manual, radio instructions, dealer invoice, dealer bill of sale, AND the dealer Corvette Order sheet, i.e., the dealer's copy of the tank sticker (but with more info than the tank sticker).

My determination to find the second-to-last owner led to one grainy photo of a license plate, which ultimately led to the the whole history of the car and all of its documention. I also cannot stress enough the need to keep past owners up to date on the car, it makes them feel still a part of it, and frequently reminds them of it which jars memories and can lead to amazing finds like mine.

Awesome stories Gary. I hope to talk to Jack Douglass soon on the red 435 I bought from Rick. I made contact with a gentleman whose dad was also a Chevy dealer in Chicago during the same time and is good friends with Jack. Who knows, may find the first 10 years of history and how it ended up silver with a small block in it.

I have a good story to tell as well! About 10 years ago or so,Ii bought a Red 63 FI coupe out of PA. I had been after the car for some 12 years and finally got the chance to buy it. When I saw the car, I new that it was the real deal and bought the car on the spot. When I got it home I found a small piece of paper in the car with a mans name and the town that he lived in. I called information and got a phone number which I called. Low and behold he was the FIRST owner of my FI coupe. I asked him if he may still have any photos, parts, or paper work for the car. He told me to hold on and came back in 2 minutes and told me how much he paid for it, the date it was ordered, all the options, etc. My heart was starting to beat out of my chest. I asked him how he knew all this info and he told me it was his favorite car, so he saved all the paper work for it including the window sticker, finance papers, order form, etc. He was kind enough to send it to me and I was so happy........Now if i could only have the same luck finding papers on my 63 Z06 tanker..........Dream on

Re: Story on finding docs, history of your car: Do you have one?

My story has been here before but here it is again. I bought the '64 in 2010 from a guy in MN. He put me in touch with the previous owner in GA. GA owner refused to tell me who he bought the car from, so dead end....... at least temporarily. As I disassembled the car I found an insurance card dated 1975. It had both the VIN number and the name and address of the NY owner at that date. I went on the web and looked for his name and found it at unbelievably the same address in NY. I called multiple times but no one answered the phone. After ~2 weeks of trying I got connected to an answering machine so I left my name and phone number and told him why I was calling. Two weeks after that he called me. It turns out he vacations in the winter in the next town north of me here in FL. He told me he was the original owner! He explained how he bought the car (he bought a '63 red/black L84 roadster that was stolen. When his insurance company paid his claim he ordered an identical '64 which is the car I bought). On some unknown date in the late 1970s he took the '64 to Atlanta where his brother-in-law had a used car business. The bro-in-law sold it for him and mailed a check. Original owner neevr knew who owner #2 was. Original owner had no documentation but did have 2 lapel pins, one from each car. He gave one to me and sold the second to Rick Aleshire. End of trail..... Temporarily.

During the restoration I listed it in the C2 registry. In mid-2011 I received an e-mail out of the blue from what turrned out to be owner #3. They said they had a bunch of original documentation. I held my breath as I waited for them to tell me they were sending it to me. They eventually sent it... after receiving a sizable check from me, but hey, there is only one set of original documentation. They got my contact info from the C2 registry and now I have the dealer order form, the dealer (Malcolm Konner) invoice, the owner's manual, the radio manual, radio instructions, warranty book, plastic bag for the manuals, cloth patch, and an original brochure.

It turned out that GA owner mentioned at the top was #4 and he promised #3 that if he ever sold the car he would sell it back to #3. That didn't happen and I guess he didn't want me contacting #3 and spilling the beans. I still don't know who owner #2 was although I have a photo of him. #3 said they would find his name for me but that never happened.

Thanks for all the parts you supplied for my restoration Andy. See you in Kissimmee???
            Doug

Bought my 58 from the 2nd owner who bought it in 1975. After looking through paperwork I found the original owners name and looked him up to find out that he died 8 months prior to me calling him his 2nd wife was tickled to hear from me she said she wasn't with him when he had the car but always talked about the corvette he owned when he was young and how he always wanted another one..wish I could have talked to him about it and let him know it's still around and now getting treated to a body off restoration. She did send me pictures of the car when it was new or pretty much new.

Not only was ownership history important but mileage documentation was as well. The car had 6700 original miles at the time and he needed to document that somehow. Through lots of detective work he did accomplish that.
Vinny published that article in the Spring of 2008 Restorer. I tried to post it on the DB but the file is to big and I can't figure out how to reduce the size or reduce it into seperate pages.
