Relay rod and pitman arm-black finish???

It states in the judging manual for 1966 that the Pitman arm and the relay rod have a "black finish" on non power steering cars. Does this mean that they are painted black or????

    Thanks

The relay and tie rod assembly was coated with an asphaltic coating at its manufacturing and assembly plant. This was a thin, black coating that is solvent-soluble. For standard steering cars, the assembly included the pitman arm, so the arm was at least partially coated. However, I expect that some sort of cover was installed on the splined end of the arm prior to the coating.

On power steering cars, the relay and tie rod assembly was also coated as described above. However, the pitman arm was not part of the assembly (since the control valve to which it attaches was also not part of the assembly). So, I believe the pitman arm was natural forged steel on power steering cars.

thanks. Any suggestions for duplicating the finish?

For me, the best bet is thoroughly cleaning and painting with a low gloss black. If you want to be more authentic, Quanta carries (or, at least used to carry) an asphaltic coating for frames. This is identical or virtually identical to the stuff Chevrolet-Buffalo used on the steering assemblies. Would I use it? No.

Thanks! No, i am running out of time and need something to apply today. I have plastidip, rubberized undercoating, flat black krylon, semi-gloss krylon. I'll probably just go with the flat black krylon. The rubberized undercoated will end up being brown and make a mess. The rubberized undercoated will flake off after just a few weeks and a few miles.

          Thanks again
