54 water pump / fan belt question

I have a couple minor detail questions regarding the fan / waterpump on my 54.

1) I have noticed ebay offerings for what is called a "water pump pully spacer" - a small disk with 5 holes that I would assume fits between the water pump pully and fan blade. What was the purpose of this and do I need to purchase this?

2) Regarding the proper my purchase of a correct fan belt - one of the major parts vendors offers two lengths, a 38" (for 53?) and a 40.4" (for 54?) but since I was starting from scratch with my engine I am not sure which to order and what is the determing factor. Is it the diameter of the fan hub perhaps or the generator pully dia????


will 2" make a difference? need a little help.

38 works, 40 might put you out of bracket adjustment. I find no documentation of a spacer, I didnt use it. Make sure you pop out the freeze plug behind the water pump if using a pass. car block.

Thanks for the help Guy - will give the 38" a try. Regarding the spacer .... could not find any reference to this part as well. I may leave this off as well unless I find out otherwise down the road it is needed.
