    Re: 1966 interior mirror

    All-------

As has been mentioned, for 1966 it was possible that 4 mirrors were used in PRODUCTION. Very early MAY have used mirror GM #910453 or GM #3849571. These are the 1965 mirrors that may have carried over to early 1966. GM #910453 is an Inland-Fisher-Guide part number and would have been a mirror manufactured by that GM division. GM #3849571 was a Chevrolet part number. It implies a mirror manufactured by an outside supplier OR simply the Chevrolet part number for the 910453 mirror.

Later 1966 PRODUCTION used mirror GM #911358 or GM #3886676. The same circumstance applies to these part numbers as to those described above.

The GM #3849571 and GM #3886676 were, as far as I can tell, never available in SERVICE. They were simply alternate part numbers for the standard mirror available to PRODUCTION. Only the 910453 or 911358 were available in SERVICE. I can say that the 910453 and 911358 were definitely NOT prismatic mirrors. I HIGHLY DOUBT that the 3849571 or 3886676 were prismatic.

The 1966-67 Corvette prismatic mirror was GM #986600. How one obtained this mirror other than through SERVICE I have no idea.

The 1966 Corvette Order Guide specifies no available option for the prismatic (day-nite) mirror. It is possible that the mirror was supplied as part of some other option (e.g. tinted glass, A/C, etc.). However, I have absolutely nothing that points toward that or otherwise implies that.

        Re: 1966 interior mirror

A few years ago, I noticed in NolanS book a picture of 1966 Corvettes coming down the assembly line. Upon close examination, it was clearly obvious that they did not have the day/night mirror. Also about that time I had the occasion to look at an original 1966 roadster that was a one owner. He swears that the only thing ever replaced was the water pump. It did not have the day/night mirror. At that time the 1966 judging manual said it should be day/night. Upon my findings, I emailed Nolan and told him what I had observed. I also contacted NCRS. Last fall when I was in Tenn. at the Corvette Expo, I noticed that the updated judging manual now says it can be either a standard or day/night. I am relating this for information only and do not claim to be as knowledgeable as many of you. I also do not know if what I related was responsible solely for the change. I hope that this helps.

I've owned my 66 since November 1979. It was built November 8, 1965 and the original mirror is dated 10-DMI-5, a non day-night type (although it sports a correct?!? day/night now ).

Since the day-night mirror wasn't an option by itself, wasn't a part of any other option package, and appears in the dealer GM accessory brochure, that seems like it points to the standard non-day/night mirror being the production-line part.

                Re: 1966 interior mirror

I found an accessory booklet for 1966. There are several items available as accessories, including a dealer/owner installed day/night mirror.

In the 60's, dealers had glass show cases in the showroom and service dept waiting room full of GM accessories for the current model year.

Obviously, portable spot lamps and locking gas caps were not available as a regular production option. Only as a dealer accessory.

There was one unique factory option though that I always thought was only a dealer accessory. I don't remember the option number or exact contents of the kit but I believe there was a "Highway Safety Kit" that included flairs and something else, possibly a red flag?

                  Re: 1966 interior mirror

I have a fairly low (seven) option 1966 mid-April coupe. It is a Bowtie car and I have the original order form. The non Day/Nite mirror is dated 1 DMI 6 and the car has V74 (hazard flasher) and AO1 (tinted glass-all windows) but not the C60 A/C. The Day/Nite mirror almost certainly was a dealer installed option as per the above comments. Of the options listed on the order form only the gold line tires are no longer on the car.
