    58 - 67 Oil Filter Canister

Just bought a 1958 - 1967 oil filter canister. It's beautiful. Nice silkscreen label. The judges will love it. No stickers or decals for me anymore. When I picked it up, the bolt started to fall out. The bolt has a copper washer under its head on the outside of the canister, and a washer inside. I'm concerned about it's leaking oil. Is that copper washer enough to seal it?

There's no conical jobby and spring attached to the bolt inside the canister like other ones I've seen. I see where the Corvette parts vendors sell "rebuild" kits for these canisters. The rebuild kits have a copper washer, and rubber washer that goes with a tube that goes over the bolt for the inside.

Anybody had any experience with these canisters? Is the conical thingie inside necessary? Can I take one off a junk canister and install it on this new one? Any experience with the rebuild kits?

I had some trouble, I made a plastic washer that was a bit smaller and put it above the copper washer.

I think the conical "thingie" holds the filter in place. I am not sure what happens it may get destroyed in taking it apart. I was once told by an very knowledgealble Corvette person these could not be taken apart but I have seen repair kits but do not know what is included in them.

I put one of these silkscreened repops on last year. I didn't mess with anything in it, just put a new filter in it and put it on. It seemed to me the bolt needed lots of tightening to make it seal on the bottom area around the bolt. I had to torque it up pretty good to stop the little drip right after I put it on and fired the car up, since I torqued it up about what the other one was I took off, and this needed more. Could be that washer you mention, but it did seal.

Old Indian trick that we did when we had the restoration shop. Took old cannister, cleaned it up, painted it black, installed good decal and then clear coated the whole canister.

That was in the old days kemosobe.LOL It will not fly today along with shinny jams. I think the spring holds the filter up. When yo buy the filter kit do you not get everything to make it work properly? Dose the spinoff adapter work with the steel one. as i remember there were two kinds. One for spin off & one for the steel one.

I don't like the thin wall of the repop cannister. JMHO

What filter cartridge does it take? Also, note the gauge (thickness) of the housing. It is about half of the original which is why I prefer to use the original (w/PF-141) on my 63 with the decal (yes it's clear coated too). I have a repo too and used to use it every other oil change to save clean up time, but lately I just take my time and clean'reuse my original. I know you can have them reconditioned w/new silk screening, but I'm afraid they will mess up the inside which seals perfectly now.

That is the reason we did what we did with the old canisters.

The crush "copper" washer should seal under the head of the bolt on the outside of the cannister. I torque mine to 20-25 ft lb.
The spring inside the cannister has a rubber seal on one end of the spring and fits up into the cone to seal against the cone. The long bolt goes thru the cannister, and thru the spring, and thru the cone. There is a knotch/punch in the bolt about 1 3/4" from the head of the bolt. The cone when pushed over this knotch then locks in place (inside the cannister). The tension on the spring holds the bolt head against the cannister. When you place the cartridge filter over the cone, the cone seals against the rubber seal on the filter. The rubber seal over the bolt ,inside the cone, seals the bolt inside the cone. Attached are pics of one disassembled. I believe the only reason the cone is locked to the bolt is to take away the tension of the filter while trying to install the whole assembly against the block from under the car. I hope this all makes sense.
