    1967 windshield washer bag question

Even though I still have the original windshield washer bag for my 1967 with ac, I thought i would purchase a reproduction one from LIC because the old one looks worn and tired. Upon receiving the repop with my original bag I concluded that it is a bit different from the LIC reproduction one. Although the size and grafics look almost identical there were several notable diffeences. The canvas on the backside of the repop is black and my original is tan. The grommets on the repop are brass and on my original they are steel. My original has the capital letter D in the lower left corner of the front and the repop has nothing. The horizintal clear line across the front is higher up on the repop than on the original.
Anyone have their original bag to compare with my original?

    Neal,

My (presumed) original has the "D" in the lower left corner, and the backside canvas is light tan, but the two grommets are too corroded to make out the original finish. The used "original" I bought to replace it has the "D" in the lower left corner, the backside canvas is light tan, looks identical in all other respects, but the two grommets are yellow-gold colored, sort of like a dull yellow cadmium finish, not shiny like brass.

Scott put a magnet up to the grommets and I think you will find that they are magnetic. I suspect that they are yellow cadnium plated steel.
From your description it sounds like your 2 original bags are the same as my orginal and that the repop I bought differs in a number of respects.
Maybe someone reading this thread knows of a supplier that offers a correct repop.

        Neal,

You were right, the grommets are strongly magnetic on both washer bags. If I find any more used originals in good condition during my parts searches, I will forward the contact information to you.

Neal - Please check the Judging Manual. My experience is that the original 67 Corvette C60 A/C windshield washer bag had a black backside and the Chev SERVICE part had a light colored backside. Pete

              Pete,

Here is the quote, p. 94 of the current 67JG:

"The backside of the bag is black, dark gray or possibly tan canvas cloth, not vinyl."

                Pete,
I had seen the judging manual description of the canvas backing which still left unexplained the difference in the grommets(brass for the grommet on the repop vs. plated steel for my assumed original) and the missing capital D from the lower left hand corner of the repop. I also have to factor in that I have owned the car since 1969 and don't recal ever replacing the bag(It is possible I did and just don't recall doing it but if I did it would have been sometime before 1980). So, maybe the originals could have had black, grey or tan canvas backs which would eliminate that objection to the repop but still leaves unexplained the steel grommet vs brass and missing D issues.
Maybe some other 67 owners with unmolested cars and the C60 option will let us know what their washer bags look like. Meanwhile I have sent the repop back and am cleaning up my assumed original as best i can and will keep looking for a really good used or NOS one. Anyone know if the steel grommets can be replated without ruining the vinyl?

Scott - Thanks for the info from the 67JG. I'm glad we give credit for the various colored backs of the GM washer fluid bags because finding a GM bag is a challenge and at least it's a GM part and not a "repop." Pete

                    Pete,
I must correct my reference to "repop" when I was talking about the washer bag I just returned. It did have a GM sticker on it. I apologize for my misstatement. How would you refer to new GM parts that vary from the originals?

Neal - Folks use considerable license when describing parts for "old" cars. In my mind NOS, i.e., New Old Stock, is appropriate when describing an new old part that is identical to the original part used in the production of the vechile but you see it a lot even if it is a later SERVICE replacement part that will function OK but configured differently. The term, New Old Replacement Stock, i.e., NORS, would be more appropriate and probably more accurate, but since there is no defined convention; it's let the buyer beware.

                      That's my 2 cents.

                      Pete

PS - It sounds like the item you returned was a GM Licensed Part and here again it might or might not resemble the original item used in PRODUCTION
