Can anyone tell me who supplies the correct small front bearing retainer for 63 Muncie trans that goes with the 421 bellhousing? Thank you, Joe

Well Joe, I believe that the nearest junk yard might be where to start. Or maybe a swap meet! Don't think anyone (China men included) will make a one year only part BUT they are on all Chevy's and Chevy II's. Anyway around here, originals are your only source!

Ebays a great place to start. Heres an example. http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI...vip=true&rt=nc

Keep an eye out there will be more listed I am sure. Quite often well established sellers can tell you when they will have more. Or they can locate it for you. Many ebay sellers are top notch.

        Michael,

That ebay bearing retainer is not correct for a small hole 1963 bellhousing. I think that part # retainer is 4 11/16" diameter and the 1963 bellhousing #421 needs a 4 3/16" retainer. They do come up now and again on ebay so keep looking.

I didn't recognise the part number. It was already sold. I was just going by the ad heading.

Just wanted to show the OP how easy it can be to find parts on the net.

I am running the original "421" bellhousing in my 63.

I would suggest Tom Ambrose. I just purchased the front bearing retainer for my 63 T10 from him. Very helpful! His number is (847) 251 8375. He advertises in the Driveline.

As far as the original ALUMINUM retainer goes, it was a one-year-only piece. However, as far as the cast iron replacement for the original retainer, it was anything but a one-year-only piece. It was originally used for many 1940 to 1954 Chevrolets and Chevrolet trucks.

The 1963-only aluminum retainer was a REALLY DUMB one-year-only idea. The cast iron replacement was far superior.

                Joe,

I would love to know the GM mindset for use of a aluminum part for a bearing retainer that a throw out bearing has to ride on. If the cast part worked for other T-10 transmissions and chevrolet models what the ---- was this change all about..

Joe, Call Larry Fisher at D&L transmissions he will have all the parts you need and he is a great guy. His number should be in the archives or google for the info.

If Larry doesn't have it or know where to get it, it cannot be gotten.

While I highly recommend that you contact Larry for the part, if time constraints are an issue, any bearing supplier that can cross reference from New Departure-Hyatt number ND47207 will get you what you need. However, they won't be able to supply you with most of the other parts you may need: Larry can.
