    Carlisle Seminar 2012

    Hey guys,
In conjunction with Carlisle Productions I am scheduled to hold a seminar again this year on 8/25, noon - 2:00 pm. Subject will be 1963-1982 differentials. I will cover stock diff's, open diff's, posi's, posi tuning, parts, procedures, Super 10 & 12 bolt vette builds. Lets hope for nice weather and hope to see some of you there. If there is time afterwards I'll hold a Q&A on diff'd, boxes, T/A's etc.

    Wouldn't miss it!
Your trailing arm seminar, I can attest was great, was the inspiration to finally extract mine for a overhaul!

        Re: Carlisle Seminar 2012

        Hi Fella's,
Just a reminder that Carlisle is only 3 months away now. I had a couple of guys call me to ask about my seminars and figured I'd post this up for all again. Still set for that Saturday @ noon & they're free what else could you ask for! I hope some of you I helped coach along with your builds will stop in for a meet & greet and to share your experience with the others in the seminar. I'm looking forward to it.

            Re: Carlisle Seminar 2012

Well just a week away now, hopefully the weather will be good! I will be covering 63-79 iron differentials mostly, not much on the 80-82 because frankly I don't like them. I will go over stock builds and what you can do to upgrade and build a vette IRS to handle 1000hp. I will have a polished and tuned posi to take apart and show you. We booked a 2 hour window to cover questions.

Hope to see you there, have a safe trip into town. I will be there from late Thurs to Sat afternoon, not sure about Sunday yet. L116-L117.

              Hi Guys
Just wanted to thank those that attended the diff seminar yesterday. I know that I crammed a lot of info into the 90 minutes, I hope I was clear enough for all. I hope you left with a better understanding of the various ways they can be built and where to make modifications to strengthen them. Some of you were going to rebuild your diff so if anyone has any questions just let me know. I had a great time working with you.

Carlisle was hot this year but no rain and it appeared to me more spaces were being used compared to the best couple of years which is a good sign.

If anyone has a suggestion for next year let me know. I am thinking of brakes, runout, 1/2 shafts, u-joint types, etc.

              Thank you
              Gary

                Re: Carlisle Seminar 2012

                Gary,

I did enjoy the seminar and it was quite informative. I consider myself a "do it myself" kind'a guy but your seminar convinced me that rebuilding a diff isn't the kind of job I can learn how to do well on the one any only try I would ever attempt (i.e rebuild my own diff). It would take a knowledge and skill that only comes with rebuilding 100's of units to meet the quality of job I would want for my own car. When it comes time to rebuild my differential, I'll just send it to you.

I still enjoyed the seminar because even if I'm not going to do it myself, I know what questions to ask the rebuilder and what the job entails. I like to know how things work. I appreciated all of the time, work and preparation you obviously put into the seminar and look forward to next year.

                Thanx

                -Floyd-

Thanks Floyd I appreciate the feedback. I was thinking about the amount of information that is thrown out during one of my seminars so maybe it would be better to have a follow up seminar to go over info again?

I'm glad you enjoyed it and now you can explain the differences between the posi's and what a polished and tuned posi is! I don't think you will find many rebuilders that will.

Have you done one on the steering gears/box for mid years?

                      Hi Don
Yes I did boxes 2 years ago, which will be 3 next year so that might be another option as well. I cover 63-82 boxes, pitman arms, parts, procedures and what I have found and seen with some sent to me. That would be an interesting one to do again and I could show complete tear down and setup.

Perhaps that is the reason I didn't remember, I have not been there since 2009. I think, after 45 years and 82,000 miles, my 67 is due for a rebuild.

For the guys who asked about the snap ring pliers I use on the side yoke snap rings, they are about 35 years old now. I got them on my first job- rebuilding Bridgeport Mill heads. I believe they are/were made by Waldes which was bought by Rotorclip 3 years ago. Mine only say Industrial pliers, P104. I have seen them in local swap meets here in CT probably because we once had machine tool jobs here. I like them better then the replaceable tip pliers but Sears has decent pliers too. If you see a set at a swap meet they should sell for under $5 so pick them up. They come in different tip size and angles so check to be sure they are the P104's.

Floyd, I have thought about it but just haven't had the time. As I mentioned in the seminar, Tom's already has a posi tuning video on You Tube. There are a ton of books out there, cd's might work but if I have time I will submit some articles to NCRS to print in the restorer.
