    ZR-1 (90-95) Oil Filter Changing? Messy as it looks?

    I don't have one, but intrigued just the same. How does one change the inverted oil filter on the C-4 ZR-1's? Thanks!!!

    I'm not a ZR-1 guy, but I'm sure they use a filter with a built-in check valve; Ferrari has used inverted filters with built-in check valves for over 45 years, and they don't dribble a drop when you remove them.

      you also have to use that type oil filters or you will hear a "rattle" from a dry start because the filter will be empty. i ran into this even with cars with horizontal oil filters like the old "iron duke" as you had to make sure the filter had a anti drain back valve. i believe that was the diffwerence between the PF-51 and the PF-52 the valve

        Yes, the anti drain-back valve was the difference between the PF-51 and PF-52.

        By the way, the old "Iron Duke" had to be one of the most miserable engines GM ever built. I experienced several of them in rental cars of the day. I once had about an 86 Camaro with the Iron Duke. That car was so gutless it should have been illegal.

            i had a new 80 citation coupe 4 speed when they came out. i could get 45 MPG out of it on the interstates drafting moving vans as they would suck me along in the draft. i would always tell the truck driver on my CB radio i was back there. . i had a fuel meter on it just to see what it would do MPG wise. i built several into 4 cylinder race engines using a mercury marine cylinder head and a small 4 barrel.

              I own a 92' ZR-1, truthfully it is the easyist car to change oil in that I have ever owned.

              Joe, the Iron Duke runs like a sewing machine compared to the old Vega 2300 now that was
              a real POS.

                Yes, I once had a 1975 Vega station wagon as a work car. The engine sounded like a thrashing machine.

                GM just never has had any real success with 4 cylinder engines. I can't think of a single one that was competitive with a Honda or Toyota. I had high hopes for the Ecotec but after driving quite a few of them in rental cars I am greatly disappointed.

                  I have two vehicles with "upside down" filters. One uses a filter with an internal check valve, the other doesn't. With both I first check to verify that the filter will loosen using the appropriate filter socket - about 1/4 turn. Then I puncture the highest point of the filter housing with a center punch.

                  Now I go on to remove the pan drain plug and after about 15 minutes I remove the filter, and they are both empty with nary a drip, but it helps to spin it off quickly and cover the bottom with a rag as you remove it.

                    i do the same thing even with a SBC filter and drain the filer into a pan before trying to remove it so i don't have a messy filter when i remove it. even with the hole you need to crack the filer loose to let in some air to get it to completely empty

                      Agreed. No mess to change oil in the LT5. Thanks to the check valve.
