    Original Paint Care

Just wondering if there are was and wax products that are better to use on original (1972) paint? Anything I should avoid?

    Thanks,

    Glen

    Glen,

My suggestion is use car wash soap as it does not remove wax like other soaps. Sometimes I use hand soap on my drivers but I know it's not right.

I use a product from Mcquires called yellow wax, it's easy on/off and seems to last a good long time.

      Hi Glenn,
      40 year old paint... NICE!
40 years ago I would have said Vista!
The fellow who painted my car with new acrylic lacquer recommends Meguires #7 polish, and then the Meguires #26 Yellow Wax that Tim mentioned.
      Regards,

I agree. #7 is one of my favorites for use on lacquer. It is just a polish so the shine it provides will fade over a few weeks if not coated with a wax such as #26.

I used to use #7 only on my red with black stripes 71 SS-454 Chevelle. It always provided a deep shine and I didn't mind having to do it often. I never put wax on that car, but then again it was never out in any weather either..........

Give that combo a try. You should like the results.

My favorite is Griots Garage show car wax or stick carnuba. Although they are not cheap they last longer than anything I have used. Best to clay bar first for the cleanest surface to wax on. Just my humble opinion.
          It's a good life!

good call Paul using the clay bar. it will clean the paint and remove some oxidation.if you dont claybar you will just be rubbing or polishing the contaminents right back into the paint. i always claybar with soap and water after a good wash while the car is still wet. however i do prefer meguiars hand polish only if the car does not get driven much. and then as maintance i use meguiars ultimate spray wax. i also like any carnuba paste wax. the paste seems to last the longest for me.

            take care,

I use good old Meguiar's "Gold Class" liquid wax on the 43-year-old original lacquer on my '69 Z/28, by hand, about once every 3-4 years; it gets washed maybe twice a season (with an ounce or so of Meguiar's "Gold Class" Car Wash, Shampoo & Conditioner in the wash bucket). Chevrolet borrowed it in late 2006 and took it to Las Vegas for the stage introduction of the new Camaro at their private national dealer show, and they took it to their show car prep/detail center just down the road from me in Sterling Heights first, as they do with all show/display cars. I wrote into the agreement that they were NOT allowed to use any power applicators or buffers on it due to the age of the paint, and they did all the prep by hand, both here and in Las Vegas. They treated the old girl very nicely.

Same products I use on my 72 Corvette.
Meguiars clay bar followed by the Gold Class. It works well on all my cars, though the 08 has "moved up" to the NXT wax.

                  Patrick,

I have tried NXT 2.0 on my C6 a few times, but I can't seem to get it to not be blotchy. I have tried several of the suggestions I received when posting my issue on the Meguiars discussion board, but I still don't get the results I'd like. I do like the shine and deepness it does provide, but when it is in the sun, the blotchy spots really bug me. Last year I washed it all off and used #26 without issue. My C6 is Lemans Blue so maybe having a darker color shows the problems more?

I don't mean to "hijack" the thread, but I would be interested in Patricks experiences with NXT.

                    tom,
nxt is a "greasy" wax. it is a pain to remove. i figured out after it hazes over i use mequiars ultimate spray wax to remove it. just mist on over the hazed wax and use a microfiber towel and it should wipe off. you will also have better results if the paint is good and clean from a claybar treatment. a "dirty" paint surface will give you fits too.

                    take care,

                      Matt,

Interesting approach removing it with the detail spray. I will give that a try.

I always use the clay bar treatment. Gotta love the clay bar...............

                        Tom,

Wax it in the garage, and let it dry. Oh, and I use the Meguiars dual action polisher (original Porter-Cable design) and put it on very thin.
An hour or so later you can remove it. I only use microfiber towels to remove it, and usually have to go over it a second time to get the little bits that are left.

If it's too thick or it's not dry then forget it. Gold Class is similar but it takes less time to dry.

This is not necessarily for old lacquer paint, but the best product that I have ever used is Zaino products.
                            http://www.zainostore.com/Merchant2/...ory_Code=Zaino.
The C5/C6 folks put me on this years ago. If you will buy the Zaino products and then follow their insturctions to the letter (wash car with Dawn dishwashing detergent, then clay bar the car, then do several other steps in their process) you will not be unhappy with the end result. Water is still beading up on my '97 Corvette and it has been years since I applied their product. Just my 2 cents.
