Is there a problem with the valve guide area?

I was changing the valve seals on the 62 (327) and noticed that one of the valve guide areas was damaged where the top edge of the casting area that is around the valve guide is broken off.

    Questions:
    1. I am assuming that this was when the PO had the valve guides replaced, correct?
    2. The more important question, is this ok?

    Thanks,

    Tony

I'd say your speculation as to the cause of the problem is correct. This is one of the possible "foibles" when valve guides are replaced with thick wall replacement guides which appears to be the case here. Inasmuch as the guides are an interference fit in the head and the fact that there is still quite a bit of native material into which the guides are pressed, I think it will be alright for continued service. It will pretty much have to be if you are going to continue to use this head as there is no really practical way to repair this sort of damage.

By the way, as you probably know, this is a 1969 head and is not original for your application. However, it is an excellent head for your application. These heads are not too difficult to find and, of course, dates mean nothing in your case. However, I don't think I'd replace it.

Thanks Joe for the insight. I did know it was not the original, but did not realize 1969. The previous owner did give me the original heads, however they are in rough shape. Right now I figure if things are working do not mess with them.

You mentioned that "it is an excellent head for your application". Are these heads actually better performance than the original ones?

      Thanks,

      Tony

In my opinion, the 3927186 is pretty much equal to the original heads IF yours is an original 300, 340, or 360 HP. It's a better head if yours is an original 250HP

this happens a lot when guides are replaced. they should have machined off the broken part so you could use positive type seals if you wanted to. they make seals for the small outside diameter of the sleeve
