Sounds like you were discussing two white coupes. Which one is the one that sat for quite a while, with almost zero miles by the first owner. It was delivered somewhere in the Northwest? Lincoln Auto Salvage have something to do with that one?

Actually the car was not purchased by Mackay. My understanding is that he has been asked to restore the car.

I don't think it really matters, other than I feel bad for Doug Dewer, who, I was told, really prized this car and wanted it to stay on the west coast, but the car was not sold to Kevin and it was not purchased with a check. The actual sale of the car is far more interesting. Again, I don't think it matters although I do find it interesting that the story is getting spun a certain way. Enough said.

Was this the first one ? VIN 9097. Tony DeLorenzo's car, sold to Canadian Doug Rowe in late '60s; raced extensively by him in Canada; he sold to friend of mine in early '80's. Pic was taken at border crossing during Bloomington delivery to Wayne Walker (ZIP). This car's history may have been written up extensively by others.

I had heard at the time that there wasn't much original left on the car Wayne Walker bought, and it was kind of a joke that he was just getting a VIN tag, Trim Tag and maybe a beat-up frame. The car in the picture certainly has a 66 front end. It would be interesting to see a rear picture. Maybe it's a whole 66 body, and that is why the 67 tags were not attached.

It wouldn't surprise me that this car still had one square inch of its original fiberglass, having been raced hard for 25 years. I believe the interior door panels were OK (as they weren't installed for a long time). At Bloomington, Walker had an "expert" (one of you guys, perhaps ) examine it and verify that the frame was the original; that sealed the deal. It had a 36.5 gal tank installed at some time prior to the early '80s. My friend (to whom Doug R. sold the car, and who, in turn, sold it to Wayne W.) sold it separately.

I do remember being there when they were looking at the L-88. I had to ask what all the hubub was about because it was not much to look at & was told they were looking to make sure it was the L-88. I can't remember who all was there besides Wayne.

The first owner's name is Steve who was a ME classmate of mine at the U. of Washington. He ordered the car from Alan Green Chevrolet and had it flat-bedded to his garage in Seattle's U-district in May 1967. It is a Rally Red Coupe.

From there he disassembled the car (I helped) with a plan to turn it into the "ultimate" drag racing car.

I bought the TI system and ran it on my L-76 SWC for several years, but it broke a couple of times (I was able to fix at no cost.) and, meanwhile, I learned how to make the single point work, so the TI system went into a box in the mid-seventies.

Meanwhile Steve suffered a failed marriage and was laid off from Boeing. With his hopes dashed, Steve sold the car to Lincoln Auto parts, still disassembled, and it was quickly sold to someone in Minnesota. Word is that the car does not have the original St. Louis installed block, but a replacement L-88 block. I know Steve was selling some parts that he had no use for, but I don't know why he would have sold the block unless he needed the money, which he may have.

I left Seattle after I graduated from UW in June '68, and talked to Steve a couple of times in the next couple of years when I returned to visit, but by the early seventies I lost track.

I heard about the fate of the car via the article in Corvette News in the mid-seventies.

Circa 1988 Doug hooked me up with David Burroughs who owned Steve's former car at the time, and I sold the TI to him. (At this point L-88s had quite a following, and I did not want the system to end up on a clone, so I was pleased to see it go back on the original car that it came from.)

Shortly after I sold the TI to Burroughs, I talked to Steve, who is still in the Pacific Northwest, on the phone. He said that whole period of his life is something he'd like to forget.
