    61-62 Hardtop window date decoding

All three windows in my June '62 hardtop show "Plexiglas, AS-4, and 116". Is the latter a GM date code? If so, it doesn't seem to jibe with the JG decode. I assume it is year 61 and wrong, but if so, what are the last two digits?

    Thanks much.

In my 62 the windows are stamped Plexiglas AS-4 6-62 side and 5-62. The side windows have the date on the left side of the glass as viewed from the rear (driver out, passenger in). I'm not sure I answered you question.

Terry- Yours is the kind of date stamp I would expect to see. The number on my windows is the three digits 116 with no dash. I'm trying to figure out what that means. Maybe they are replacement windows.

      Thanks,
      Charlie

Very possibly a November 1960 top. They often didnt use the "0" in 1960 dating. E.g. 6 J expansion tanks, etc. (September 1960)

          Mike,

Probably not a '60 - '61 and '62 tops were unique to accomodate the small rise in the body under the rear window.

All three of my 1960 hardtop windows are stamped 9-60. I have seen a 1961 hardtop and the original plexiglass date code was similar to my 1960 date code, a month and last 2 digits of the year.

I didn't say it was a 60 top!!!!!!! Having owned 34 61's and 62's, I'm reasonably aware that there are differences. Of course, I've only owned 9 56-60's, so what do I know?

All three pieces of glass in my 1962 hardtop are AS-4 and 161.

That would make sense, assuming that a "dash" between month and year isn't always present in these stamps.

John, is your production number early and thus a 61 glass would be reasonable?

That would mean, with you car bring built when it was, that the top is not the one that came on your car. A January 61 top would not have been installed on a 10,000 serial number 62. Those tops got switched around on cars a lot in the early years. I know of a large dealer that took the hardtop off every used 2-top car they took in trade and put them in a storeroom. When you bought a used car, they would then negotiate with you for a hardtop, and pull a correct-color one, with no regard to dates, from the storeroom.
