Rear spring cups....midyear...what year did change over occur?

Good Friday evening all. Just resto'd a rear mid year spring which still had it's original spring cups.......which are (somewhat) swallower than later cups. At what timeline did GM change over to a deeper cup?

The change occurred for the 1967 model year although it's possible that some earlier 1967 were equipped with the earlier style retainer.

        Micheal,

Joe is correct. I've done a fair bit of research on the two styles of cups and I've found that the use of the early style cups predominates at the start of the '67 model year. How long that extended into the '67 model year is the question. I've seen one '67 with VIN 67xx with a build date of Dec 27 that had the early style cups on both the spring and T-arms. But I've also seen a '67 with VIN 63XX that had the late (steeper lip angle) style. I've also seen a '67 with VIN 37xx that had early style on the T-arms, but the late style on the spring. The owner of one of the well-known Corvette catalog companies told me that he owns a '67 with a VIN < 500 and it has the later style cups.

My rule of thumb is that any '67 with a build date in Sep, Oct, Nov or Dec could indeed have had the early style cups. I don't have any data between '67 VINs 67xx and 14xxx, so there is a large gap in my research and I can't say with any certainty when the early style cups were completely exhausted from inventory. What I advise people to do for '67s is to replace any non-restorable cups with the same style that they are removing.
