    1959 Corvette judging guide questions

A good friend, Don Cast, who is an NCRS member but does not know how to post on this board asked me to help him out on some judging guide issues. His early built 1959 Corvette has the 245 HP, two-fours, and Powerglide and was judged at Frisco, Texas last year. He scored 98.6. He wants to know the following:
1.) Does he have the copper radiator?
2.) If he has the copper radiator which radiator cap was most likely installed? Page 76, cap AC cap 7#?
3.) Oil caps on Page 56, is it the far left cap, breathing or closed?
4.) Fuel caps on Page 35, which were most likely installed on early built '59s, the Standt?
5.) If an NCRS judge were looking at his car what caps would he/she expect to be on the car in items 2.) through 4.)?

    Thanks,
    Scott Sims

Copper Radiator-Yes. Vented Breather. I think most of your questions should be answered in a current '58-60 judging guide, which is not in my possession, but if I owned a '59, I'd have one...

Thanks, Mr. Clupper. He has the latest edition of the '59-'60. Don wants to have what is absolutely correct for his '59 Corvette. And since i look for those parts for him and he pays for them i want to be certain, too. When there are between two to five depictions of caps for each of the three caps he needs we both want to be sure without question the next time he has it judged. I assume the judging sheets he got were from the latest JG.

A guy who collected and sold fuel caps told me in 59 the eaton was most common, so that's what I got for my 59. This is completely anecdotal of course. I couldn't really say on the radiator cap. but like Bill said, the oil cap should be the vented breather type. pay attention to the markings on the top also.

Thanks, Ian. I am currently at a swap meet digging through boxes and have come across vented breather type oil caps as depicted in the JG but there is a references to radius variances between the passenger car and Corvette caps. What does the Eaton cap look like?

Another book he should get is the 1958-60 Restoration Handbook, there are many pictures of original items and what to look for. I have found it to be the most helpful of all the books I have. There is an Eaton cap in there I would post a picture but the copyright thing may cause a problem.

In addition to the NCRS publications my favorite informational book is "Essentials a Corvette collectors guide" by Chuck Brigermann.
Lots of specific year info in a condensed format.
Covers 1956 through 1967 with info grouped by year.

We're all friends here. Hopefully they wouldn't complain as they are from the NCRS, so long as you aren't reproducing stuff wholesale. You can find pics of those caps all over ebay usually. I can't upload a pic on here as either it requires IE or because I'm on a mac. PM me your email and I can send a pic. I'll try again later as well. FYI the webconsole throws error "[11:46:03.032] Error in parsing value for 'overflow'. Declaration dropped." when selectign or clearing the file(s), but not when actually trying to upload. then you get the [!].

                  got uploads working.
Note: on an original cap, the edge of an eaton stamp will be visible just underneath the handle as well.

Ian...I would hope that is the case but, you just can't tell, anf I do not have the temperment to go thru a legal battle if it came to that.
