    69 temp guage

at times temp guage reads only 110 then will read 230 but never a normal reading. Have replaced thermostat 3 times (180 degree). doesnt seem to be overheating. I checked threads but no info with this scenario. guage or sender issue???

Could be either. Easier to test/change the sender than it is to dive behind the center cluster. Keep your fingers crossed.

I am pretty sure I read a story in The Restorer regarding how to test/adjust the temperature sensor to the gauge -- I believe they were installed as a matched set the story said. I also seem to remember someone posting resistance values at given temperatures for the sensors on this site. Since changing the temperature sensor (unless it has been out recently) is only marginally less arduous than changing the gauge -- "test, don't guess" might be an appropriate dictum.

When I did the motor rebuild, I replaced the sender on the block. The sender was cheep and a easy replacement. If that doesn't work it is either a poor conection or the time consuming replacement of the gauge. Terry is correct in checking first if you have the tools.

IIRC it was a 60 ohm resistor that will make your temp. gauge read 230. If you get a rheostat that has at least 60 ohms of resistance you can in theory turn the rheostat and watch the gauge move up and down.
If that works, it's not the gauge,

If you use a resistor to calibrate a temp gauge, then you have only ONE accurate reading.

Remove the wire from the sensor and ground it. With the ignition on, the guage should read full scale. With the wire ungrounded, ignition still on, it should read left of scale.

Have you replaced or removed the sender recently? If so, did you use pipe thread sealer or Teflon tape on the threads?
