    Re: 67 Brake handle cover

And a few pictures of NOS examples, one brown (first two pictures) and one black (last two pictures. Both examples have an AC Delco style date (sunburst with number 88 in center) molded into the back side. The brown molding has a couple rough spots where the brown has chipped or rubbed away, revealing yellowish-white underneath (see 2nd picture below).

The black NOS example has the letters "A B S" (Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene?) and "P - O - F" molded into the plastic (see picture 4), while the brown NOS example does not have the letters "A B S" (or "P-O-F") molded into it. The black NOS example appears to be black plastic all the way through.

      Re: 67 Brake handle cover

      Scott,

We need to start another thread for the coupe rear window garnish moldings.

Could you please start another thread and re-post your comments, photos and questions...

We are sorta hijacking Neal's discussion, and might get more responses with a separate thread.

      Thanks,

      Nick

If the new forum software will allow me to repost the pics... I'll give it a try.

On the parking brake handle cover subject, my original cover on the '67 I have owned since the early 80's, has the above described yellowish white base material and is painted white to match the interior. The depressions at the stud bosses are very faint. The previous owner of the car purchased a new cover from a local Chevy dealer in the early 80's and it is made of black base material and the depressions are more clearly visible (the black color on the new cover vs the white original may contribute to this). Both covers have part #389730 moulded onto the underside but the box the new cover came in is labeled with part # 3894541.

The 3897370 molded on the underside is the part number for the bare molded console. It was never a PRODUCTION or SERVICE part number. The 3894541 is the finished (painted) part number as used in PRODUCTION or SERVICE.

              Joe,

Have you seen the underside of any reproduction parking brake covers? I was thinking that the presence of the GM 3897370 part number molded into the plastic, although not the finished part number, might still distinguish an original or NOS GM part from a reproduction part.

I have not looked at the reproductions, at least that I can recall. The embossed number probably does indicate that the part is a GM piece. However, if the part is currently reproduced under the GM Restoration Parts Program it could have the number, too. However, even if they are reproduced under the GM license, I doubt that the restoration parts would include the number. That much attention to detail is rarely seen in GM Restoration Parts, especially for an unseen-when-installed detail.
