66 Trailing arm shims inside or outside frame pocket?

For 1966 judging purposes are the ends of the shims tucked in the frame pocket or do they extend beyond the pocket?

    Ron,

I believe you'll find original shims hung over the frame and were not tucked. Furthermore, original shims were not slotted as many if not all replacement shims offered will be.

I also have a 73, it has the slotted shims as original that year.

In the later cars with the slotted shims, did GM tuck these shims in the pocket?

        Ron,

Slotted shims are retained in the frame pocket with a large cotter pin that goes through a hole drilled for that purpose.

Do you own a assembly manual(s) as it will resolve some your questions. It will reveal later cars like your '73 were "tucked" into the frame and incorporated a cotter pin through the frame to keep them in place.

            Michael,
This situation is a classic case of "a little bit of knowledge is a very dangerous thing."

Long time attendees at Advanced Judging Schools will have heard this story, and I have posted it several times.

The hole in the frame for the cotter pin to secure the slotted shims began in Model Year (MY) 1969 and that AIM shows slotted rear toe shims. Those with that AIM can look up the change/release date.
Those of us who study original Corvettes (the only true source of accurate information. ) know that slotted rear toe shims were first installed on Corvettes in the last week of 1970 MY production. IIRC they (slotted rear toe shims) first appeared a full calendar year after the date in the 1969 AIM. You just can't believe everything you read.

Sorry, I missed that there is Michael and Mickie posting here. Michael was who I was talking to. Mike Ward is hopeless.
