    need to pull engine

I need to pull the engine for overhaul on my 65 327-300. The last time I did this was on my 67 327-350. That was about 25 yrs ago. I removed the engine only, and I seem to remember that it was a bear to break the 2 apart and them mate them with the trans installed. Am I better off removing the engine and trans as one piece, even though I don't need the 4 spd trans out?

    thanks

    Myron

ive done several engine pulls and that's the way I've always done it. Disconnect the shifter linkage, drive shaft and clutch linkage. Pulls right out at a steep angle.

Don't Forget Speedo Cable - also just to be safe pull the radiator just in case the whole unit was to swing forward. I've pulled both big block and small blocks on 64-67 this way with no issues. Might not hurt to have second pair of hands to work the hoist while you keep pressure on tail shat of trans - as Jim stated you need a steep angle to pull this way

The use of a GOOD hoist trolly is very benificial here. To pull the engine/trans requires a fairly severe angle.

Grab an engine leveler as well. It is a big help. Harbor Freight has them pretty cheap if you don't plan to use it too often.

Thanks guys. One more question. The car has ac. Can I remove the compressor and just hang it out of the way without removing hoses?

That's how I did it (several times). Just take it slow and make sure the compressor is secured.

Not trying to hi-jack this thread, but how difficult will it be to re-install a 327 with powerglide trans back in as 1 unit OR if it will be better to do them separately?

...wanna do a Special 300 HP configuration with the McCagh Special camshaft?

And what does this do to the overall charastics & function of the engine? Thanks

I just pulled the SB out of my '65 Coupe. We left the PG trans attached. It was not difficult but it does have to come out at a pretty steep angle. Pulled it to be able to better clean up the eng compartment and also to clean the eng and trans. Good luck.

One more thing: one item I failed to detach was the oil line running from the rear of the engine block going to the oil pressure guage. I pulled this line out of the back of the guage when the engine came out. A dumb mistake. I think it can be repaired.

Thanks Mike, have done with manual trans before but never with powerglide. I will be putting it back into a restored car. Back 18 years ago I removed the body 1st then the trans on this car. Nice to keep things moving at a fast pace over an 18 year period.

When you buy an engine "leveler" or "tipper", buy the good kind with the screw and handle. Don't get the cheapo kind with the cables that works by inserting a ratchet handle.

When I removed my 70's engine I used a thicker than normal type broom stick with the sweeping end cut off placed in the engine compartment and tied the 70's air conditioner compressor to it without disconnecting any of the hoses.
