    66 L79 Oil Dipstick Questions

inch space, (2 circles) FULL ENGINE OIL and M ??

Does the black plastic tip in the chrome curved handle have a small lip on it? Is there a dimple in the handle near the metal skirt?

Lots of questions and appreciate any help,

    Dave

Re: 66 L79 Oil Dipstick Questions

Here is one I believe to be original. 21" from plastic seal to tip. The stick is 1/4" wide and the markings are heavily embossed. Sorry for blurry.

    Edit:
there is no twist in the blade. Only a bow in it that you can see in the pics. I see no lip on the black button, and there is no indent in the handle.

      Thanks Don,

It looks like your blade is straight and not twisted. Is that correct?

        Dave,

You dipstick MIGHT be the "early" 1965 version of the 3864974 dipstick since the it embossed and 1/4" wide.

The January 1965 issue of "Chevrolet Service News" has an article about twisting the stick part of the 283 & 327 dipsticks if it is too flexible (photo below). It make sense to me that the 3/16" wide dipsticks were more flexible then the 1/4" wide dipsticks.

I have 5 Chevrolet & Corvette 283/327 dipsticks and all are "twisted".

Early 1965? Chev. 283/327 (embossed "ENGINE OIL M" w/green plastic tip, 3 1/8" long handle, stick part 1/4" wide, possibly GM #3860099

        3/16" wide dipsticks:
        1965 or 1966-1967 Chev. 283/327 (stamped "ENGINE OIL E" w/green plastic tip, 2 7/8" handle)
        Early 66 Chev. 283 ("T1208GF"), Dec. 08, 1965 (stamped "ENGINE OIL E" w/green plastic tip, 3 1/8" long handle), GM #3876786
        67 Chev. 283 ("K0511GF"), May 11, 1967 (stamped "ENGINE OIL" w/green plastic tip, 3 1/4" handle), GM # 3876786
NORS 65-74 3862730 dipstick (1980's vintage) stamped "USE SE ENGINE OIL 3862730 M" w/black plastic tip, 3 1/4" long handle)

        I believe that the only difference between the 1965-1967 Corvette base dipstick (GM # 3862730, A = 20 5/32" and B = 20 59/64", stamped "ENGINE OIL M") and the 1965-1966 Corvette 327 w/SHP dipstick (GM # 3864974, A = 20 5/32" and 20 15/16") is the chrome plated handle and the "B" distance (1/64" longer).

        The 65-67 Chev. dipsticks (GM # 3860099 and GM # 3876786 where A = 20 1/8" and B = 20 49/64", 1/32" & 5/32" shorter) were almost the same length as the 65-57 Corvette dipsticks.
