    C1 Wheel Gurus

Coming to this august group with a question a Mason Dixon member asked me since I am the Chapter Judging Chair, and NO I have not looked at the fine TIM&JG as yet.

He said noticed on the spare wheel (up near the lugnut holes) for his 1959 it is stamped "Patent Pending". Have any of you august C1 gurus seen anything like this before?

Hi Rick all the wheels I have seen, I've never seen "patent pending" But then, no one believes me about wheels anyway. I would say, that wheels were the number one thing that were changed the most on the cars. Phil 8063

I have an original 59 set here--came off a March car--no patent pending, nor have I ever seen that on any of the many wheels I've had.

        Rick,

I have a wheel in the trunk as a spare that has something faint stamped in the wheel. But surface rust has it hard to read. "LOOKS" like it could be ..I have 2 styles of wheels one with rivets and one is welded.. which is the correct one for a 1960. the one welded has the words stamped in it..

Here's what I found when I started looking for wheels for my 1960. I found generally on forum searches that I needed Welded Dog Bone wheels (see first photo). However the TIM&JG isn't specific on this and The Nolan Adam's book says they used both Riveted and Welded wheels for the 58-60 cars.

Some other (I think correct) characteristics of correct wheels include the letters GM stamped per the second photo. Also there is the Kelsey-Hayes and 15x5K stamp inside the rim photo 3. In photo 4 you can see the outer and inner hubcap lugs to hold either the full size hub cap or a dog dish hubcap. Also there is a double "hump" in the profile of the center which is difference that other 15X5 wheels. That's a little hard to see in the 4th photo.

            Gentlemen,

If you do a search of the archive you should find lots of good 59-60 wheel information posted by the late great Rev Dale Pearman himself.

Well. My wheel is not this clean to see the number. But just wonder why I have a spare as a welded wheel and the riveted wheels as the main

                Al -

If you have one of those riveted wheels with the tire dismounted, is it 5" or 5-1/2" inside-of-flange to inside-of-flange?
