In checking my photos, which include all the 70-72 Bowtie candidates and display cars that went on the lift from 2011, I see no stickers on any of them. It's at least 3 cars, possibly 4, and includes the 300 mile car.
On my yellow car, no sticker. On my blue car, no sticker.
I also just searched the other 70-72 cars that I happen to have photos of that also show the front stabilizer bar. No stickers.

I'm going to suggest that the sticker was probably gone when most of these bars were painted, so the number of existing "stickered" bars is relatively small.
That's just my observation.

Hi Patrick,
The bar from my 71 has about 1/3 of the original paint on it. The remaining paint is evenly distributed, and enough is still present so that it appears no area of the bar was 'masked' by a label when the bar was painted.
So it follows your observation.

Hello Everyone

As Terry says we need more than one example to make changes to the JM. I would like to add my '71 to the discussion as an example. I have owned it since it was eight months old and have not fooled with the chassis. A painted over paper tag/tape is located on the passenger side of the sway bar on the portion that is curved back toward the mounting bracket. The bar was painted black from the factory. Hope this will help.

here is a pic i took of a 3500 mile 71. looked through all of my pics and never saw a daub of paint on the front stabilizer bar of any original car. looks like the bar was dipped or painted after the sticker was applied so the sticker was painted black with the bar. that is exactly the kind of thing i take pics of when i get to see an original car. I have seen a few original cars most likely the same ones Patrick has seen and a few more. My problem forgot my camera to take photos (my bad) but have seen the tag mostly on the right side after it turns to the mounting link. But also have seen it like some of the photos in the middle area of the bar and 1 where it was on the left side after the turn to the link. If memory serves my correctly (not as sharp when I was younger ) about 4 to 5 cars tag on the right 2 cars in the middle but now 4 after the new photos from Patrick and Mike and 1 on the left side.

i saw the car at a SE chapter meet in Chattanooga in 2008. It is a yellow 71 with 3500 miles on it. I was building my 72 LT1 at the time so i took a hundred or so pics of this car. it was a pretty nice car. it looked like it had been sitting in someones garage for several years. all of the unpainted parts had surface rust on them. it was not a perfect car but it was nice. i was taking pics of overspray and stuff like that as a refference for building mine. I ended up building a nice driver out of my 72 because i found a complete original 70 LT1 convertible while building the 72. the 70 was a rough car but it was all there for the most part. the 70 will be my show car when i complete it. i have been spending all of my money buying gas instead of building my car so it might be a while before i complete it. body and interion is all i have left but that will probably cost $20,000 to complete. paint and body work is NOT what i do. the 70 LT1 is a real early power steering car. 12551. i am building this car by the book with a tripple crown in mind. most of my restoration knowledge is in 1957 fuelies but they cost too much to build now so i moved on. 70 to 72 cars have always been my favorite so i have moved on to them. i love these cars. i also have a yellow 70 ls-5 convertible. it like most of the cars i buy it rough... really rough. some day i will build it too. i bought it as a parts car but decided i liked it too much to kill it. had to hide it from the wife for 2 years but thats a story for another time.

OK guys, great thoughts and opinions and I am changing some of my original thoughts on how I will do my bar, and what might have been the original process. I am trying to understand the process the "General" used. It seems almost a universal opinion (I unfortunately am not totally convinced) the bars were black, we have assumed "dipped". What I don't understand is: the bar comes out "as forged" at the manufacturer/contractor. At that point, did the contractor put a broadcast sticker on it and run it through a paint dip?????????? Just does not make sense to me to install the broadcast prior to dipping-how is it going to be identified in St. Louis? Or, are we saying the bar was shipped "as forged" with the broadcast attached and the paint dip process was completed in St. Louis????? Guess I was not aware St. Louis had paint dip capability-does anyone know?? If the paint dip was completed at the manufacturer/contractor, would it not make sense to dip, to then install the broadcast after paint? I am thinking the bars were shipped "as forged" with the broadcast for ID and were intended to be painted (in St. Louis), but perhaps some did not make the paint process, therefore, leaving open the resolve indicated in the JM that either "as forged" or black dipped was possible. I realize I am putting way too much thought into this, but I enjoy trying to figure out how processes were completed and when and how they changed over the years.

From what myself and others have stated the label and remnants of the label has been seen but the volume is low compared to the total amount of cars seen have not seen a car with a paint daub at this point. But the amount of original cars C3 that I have viewed the bar has been painted black. I think John Hinckley has post before at St. Louis any priming and painting of sub parts that came in raw were done at the non Corvette side of the plant. That is where they had the setup to do that there was no room on the Corvette side for this function. But the majority of bars seen have been painted it is your car to do as you feel but I have always stated that the car should be restore to what it tells you during disassemble not what the judging guide states. Over the years we probably lost many cars that were restore to the guide but not as assembled.

If these bars appear to be coated mostly on the top and sides, but not much on the bottom, (like the one in the pic above) that might suggest that they were sprayed after they were installed on the chassis, just like 63-67 was. This even makes sense.

If a label was used on the bar for C3's, the coating process would cover the label.

If the mufflers on early C3 cars were sprayed, (blackout) it's possible/likely that the bar was sprayed at the same spot on the assy line.

There would be no point in attaching a sticker with a broadcast code on the bar before paint if the sticker is covered with paint. A broadcast code sticker is to be used for ID at the assembly plant.


If that's the case, we would see exactly what everyone seems to be seeing. A sticker covered in black.

No other sequence would be logical.

I still don't think stickers or labels were used for any stabilizer bars for 63-67.

I agree - many of the vendors sell stickers for the midyear front stabilizer bar, but they didn't leave St. Louis with one. Midyear bars were received raw, "as-forged" from Chevrolet-Detroit Forge, and went on the chassis that way. If they were painted in later years, that was after my time.
