    1972 Carpet Underlayment

Since I have already have the seats out for other reasons I'm thinking about replacing the carpet (faded rear and an incorrect replacement in the front). I've scanned the archives and decided on Al Knoch for the carpet. I am a little unsure of who makes the best reproduction underlayment. Would anyone have a recommendation? I thought I might wait to place the order for the underlayment until I pulled out the existing carpet to see if the original could be reused but I'd like to already have a vendor in mind. Also does the installation of a thermal barrier kit result in any point deductions?

    Thanks,

    Glen

    Glen,

The thinnest thermal barrier with the best temp reduction is HushMat. www.hushmat.com

Last Restorer or maybe the issue prior had a very nice article on installing HushMat in a '67.

Our very own Admin John Waggoner just finished up install HushMat in his '62. he found the best price on e-bay. You might want to email John and ask for the ebayer's seller name.

      Re: 1972 Carpet Underlayment

      Hi Glen,
If you find your car still has the original underlayment it might be good enough to reuse. Most of the underlayment sold with new carpet sets seems to be quite different than the original.
I believe I read that someone is reproducing the original; but I really can't remember whom. Perhaps someone else will.
I think the condition of the underlayment depends on how much the car leaked over it's life.
      Regards,
      Alan

No point deduction if it can't be seen.

As usual, Alan wins with excellent photos.
Knowledgeable interior judges will look for the difference in underlayment when judging carpeting. I kept the underlayment from a friend's 1970 convertible just for the purpose of comparison and using as a pattern.

            Hi Russ,
            Interesting point.
Since I believe judges are cautioned "to try not to touch the car any more than is neccessary to accomplish their task" it may be proper and possible for a judge, by gently touching the carpet, to see what underlayment is used in at least a couple of locations.
            Your thoughts?
            Regards,
            Alan

Here's a place I'd try to check since the underlayment extends very close to the edge of the carpet pieces.

Lift up the flap at the front of the seat tracks.

                Alan,

Looking at your photos I will have to purchase new for at least the front. What was under the carpet doesn't have the black backing nor is the area covered as large as your photo indicates.

Thanks for posting the photos. They are a great reference.

                  Gary,

I'll pull that issue off of the shelf and read the article. I'll also contact John about his source.

                  Thanks for the info.

                  Glen

                      Hi Terry,
The quote is from the 7th Edition CORVETTE JUDGING REFERENCE MANUAL.
It's found in Section 14- Judges, Observer Judges & Owners Meetings.
