I have a 1967 big block and recently after driving the car for about 20 minutes and I turn off the engine and attempt to restart it I get nothing. The engine does not crank, clock stops running etc. If I let it sit for about another 20 minutes, engine starts right up. Today it happened as I was pulling back in my driveway. Car died once in the driveway, same symptoms, once I saw the clock start ticking, I turned the key and she started right up. Additionaly, the last two times I have taken the car out I get a loud back fire coming from what sounds like the left side exhaust. Any ideas?

Re: 67 big block engine dies
I had the same problem, everyone I talked to said the same as Wayne, which is a good point but that didn' fix mine. I had a short in the wiring harness or should I say a break in a wire. The same red wire Wayne is talking about. It was about even with the radiator. Luckly the black tape had started to melt or I would still be picking my butt.- Top

I agree with Wayne,
Because the clock also stops, that's showing that it is a total electrical failure.
The back fire happens when the power is lost to the ignition pumping unburnt fuel into the exhaust then exploding when the power to the ignition comes back.
Trace that red wire as he said.
