First design started with 1965 production. I don't know how long this continued, but I see in my Jan 1971 P&A30B catalog that they only list the part #'s (and identifying casting #s) for the 1st series. [Maybe they were still depleting stock].
Gr 5.510 First design 3-series Eaton case cast EDB 30175. First design 4-series Eaton case cast EDB 30117. Second design 3-series cast ED 32297 PW. Second design 4-series cast EDB 32298.
First design has a postage stamp-sized window opposite the big window, (where you remove the guts); second design has a much larger oval-ish shaped window opposite the big one. Supposedly, the 2nd design is much less subject to cracking of the case, so it's considered the "good guy" piece. I believe there is backward compatablity 2nd >> first >> '63-4 Dana carriers.
So when did this 1st >> 2nd happen in Warren production ? Hard to tell by examining used posi diff's because so many have been upgraded due to breakage or gear (series) ratio change. First big pic below is of a 1st design 3-series. You can see the small window on the left side. Thumbnail below that shows 2nd design 3-series -- the small window has grown.
