    C2/C3 Eaton Posi Cases -- when did 1st design >> 2nd design ?

First design started with 1965 production. I don't know how long this continued, but I see in my Jan 1971 P&A30B catalog that they only list the part #'s (and identifying casting #s) for the 1st series. [Maybe they were still depleting stock].

Gr 5.510 First design 3-series Eaton case cast EDB 30175. First design 4-series Eaton case cast EDB 30117. Second design 3-series cast ED 32297 PW. Second design 4-series cast EDB 32298.

First design has a postage stamp-sized window opposite the big window, (where you remove the guts); second design has a much larger oval-ish shaped window opposite the big one. Supposedly, the 2nd design is much less subject to cracking of the case, so it's considered the "good guy" piece. I believe there is backward compatablity 2nd >> first >> '63-4 Dana carriers.

So when did this 1st >> 2nd happen in Warren production ? Hard to tell by examining used posi diff's because so many have been upgraded due to breakage or gear (series) ratio change. First big pic below is of a 1st design 3-series. You can see the small window on the left side. Thumbnail below that shows 2nd design 3-series -- the small window has grown. m

    Wayne,
I really don't have any books to go by just the years of working on these. Dana posi 63-64 junk, 65-68 Eaton first design prone to cracking more then the later 69-79 and still current available new cases. I have and still get original diffs to rebuild, all the posi's in these 65-68's are the first design used in the vette. The open diff was standard up till 1970 and I still see those from time to time. Built one for a 65 in CA a few years ago and for street cruising a posi wasn't needed.

back in the day the guys who road raced corvettes shot peened the cases and hand ground any place there would be a stress riser like around the openings.

I still polish every case I build but don't peen them. Those postage stamp cases have a poor casting design that is the weak link with them. The later cases are stronger but I've seen them come apart. I took my son 8,000 HARD ABUSIVE miles to blow a 10 bolt to pieces. Thats when I built him a 12 bolt, so far he's blown up 3 BW ST-10's but the 12 bolt is solid. He just put in a Liberty Gear Tremic TKO 600 and will be back at the track again soon.
