Re: 1957 dual 4bbl & dual point distributor Dwell
OK, for a dual point setup, the first thing you have to do is dwell each set of points individually. This is done by using a piece of paper as in insulator (part of a 3X5 notecard works nicely, and cranking the engine (This takes two people) (cap off, secondary coil wire off the cap and grounded) adjust the dwell (cranking the engine) on the working set of points usually 32-34 degrees and then switch the Insulator from the blocked set of points to the set you just set and redoo the operation to set the second set. Pull the insulator and you should have a total dwell in the 36-38 degree range. Reassemble the rotor and cap, start and time and you are good to go. Dwell "wearin" of any significance is largely a myth if the lubricant is properly applied to the points rubbing block. By the way, it's a LOT easier to pull the distributor and set the points on a dist machine then reinstall...Bill Clupper #618- Top

19 degrees or 19 thousands?
Typical point gap determined in an emergency, set on the side of the road, with the matchbook cover should be about 19 thousands to get you up and running before checking the dwell with a meter which should read then about 30 degrees.- Top
