GM's recommended idle speeds for some SHP engines are too low IMO. It's somewhat subjective, and my rule is to set it as low as possible commensurate with acceptable idle quality.
What constitutes "acceptable idle quality" varies with ithe individual, but IMO it takes 750-800 on a L-79.
Also, one should use a known accurate test tach to set idle speed as the vehicle tach may not be that accurate within 50 revs at idle speed.
Acceptable idle speed has little to to with the installed carburetor, but the installed camshaft, particularly overlap is the biggest factor, so if you have something other than a L-79 cam installed...
One should set the idle speed along with the idle mixture for best results. This procedure is in the service manual.
