    C1 Ignition Shielding install

I'm fighting with the right side. I can not seem to get the vertical section anywhere close to mate up with the horizontal section. 283/230 car.

I have the original parts but am trying to fit a new set as the original parts are very rusty. Comparing the original vs the new RH vertical part, they are very close so the problem is not with the part (most likely the problem is with the installer..........)

I know the upper fits into the lower, but I have the lower installed just to gauge how much I need to move the upper to get it to line up.

The verticle section should be a little flexible and can be bent. Assemble the two pieces off the car and bend, then reinstall. That's what I had to do.

I maybe wrong, but on my 59, that upper "tab" fit inside the lower horizontal piece, not on top of it. How else could you run the wires?

        John,

The original vertical section was made of a lighter gauge steel then the new one and was probably pretty easy to bend. The new one is pretty rigid, but I'll give it a try. The main hold up seems to be the lower spark plug wire holder that is attached to the down draft tube. The vertical part seems to bottom out on the plug wire holder before it will seat into the lower shield (if this makes sense........) I think you can tell that from the one picture.

It'll be hot in the garage tonight so maybe the metal will bend easier.

Loosen up the spark plug holder and get everything on before tightening.

            Tom -

See your Assembly Manual (Radio option section) or Noland's book, page 357. The bottom leg in your first photo (with the long green U-nut on it) goes ABOVE the angled bottom flange at the rear of the horizontal shield; the wing bolt goes through a hole in the angled flange on the rear of the horizontal shield, upward into the U-nut on the bottom of the vertical shield. Bend to fit.

              John,

Yes, I had it that way, but I moved it to the outside for the pictures to show how far off it is.

That being said, I found the source of most of the problem was that I had the lower clamp on the down tube on backwards. I turned it around and that moved the tube forward giving me some more room. The AIM also shows a spacer between the rear bracket and the exhaust manifold. I found that two 3/8" split ring lock washers seem to move the bracket out enough to allow me to get the wing nut installed. So as of now I have the right side installed, but it wasn't easy.

              Thanks for the tips everyone.

                Re: C1 Ignition Shielding install

                An update

I was trying to get the new shielding on the car in time for the local show (CCDV Cavalcade). Try as I did, for several hours and many expletives, I could not get the vertical shields in place. So I decided to just go with the top cover and the plug shields installed.

At the show, my 60 was parked in the "heritage" display with approx 8 other C1's. I asked each owner that had ignition shielding how they got it one and each one told me that it took a bit of work, but it does go on. I began to doubt my mechanical skills (I built a 9 second Camaro, but can't get ignition shielding on...............)

Anyway, today I removed all of the new shielding. I got out the original rusted shields and proceeded to put them on. Well, what do you know, 10 minutes later I had all of the shielding in place. I removed it all and spent about 2 hours cleaning the rust off of the original parts. They came out real nice, not perfect, but the remaining rust sopts and bubbled chrome areas match the "patina" of the rest of the car.

                Reproduction parts...................

Tom, heard somewhere if you have the original shields you will have to set them side by side with repops , get your Dremel tool out and proceed to cut & shape the repo's holes to match the original's fit, sometimes they are too far off (made in china) if they were from certain venders......
