    Re: Trailering question

PACK BEARINGS every year.......REPLACE TIRES every two years, wheather they need it or not. AND YES, TIRE PRESSURE is critical.

One blow out in 23 years of trailering race cars and horses. And that was on a used horse trailer going home from the sellers house. And his spare rim DID NOT FIT.....Not even close.
NEVER use passenger tires......just rated TRAILER tires.

Jim, I have always had better luck with LT tires vs ST (trailer tires). In lieu of the 225 X 15 ST tires, I run a 7:00X15 LT. Most of the time you will have to buy a Yokohama tire, but they are definitely better than most of the no name ST tires you find

My last tow was in 1998, so I am sure things have changed today. And I agree, I used the ''LT'' 8 ply rated as I remember.

One of the big problems with trailer tires is when backing up or parking the side walls get a work out hitting the curbs. I always parked away from the crowd so I did not have the problem of bumping sidedwalls.

My trailer is an 18' enclosed Car Mate that was new in 2007 and it has a few miles on it but the tires (205 X 15R) look new. The trailer with the 62 in it weighs 6100 lbs. and seems to tow nicely.
What temperature should I see on the "thermo" gun as I check during the trip to Carlisle? What temperature is too hot (I assume the temperature is a predictor of shredding)?
          Patrick:

Just a quick update. I just got back from towing my 70 Z28 to Ceder Rapids IA from N.Central Illinois. (About 150 Miles) I have ST 225 X 15R Marathons.
On the way out the temp was about 90 degrees outside. All my tires registered around 120 degrees on the thermo gun. On the way back a couple of days
later when the temp was around 75 degrees outside all my tires registered around 80 degrees. Everything went well on the trip. The judged meet was put
on by the AACA and car earned a Senior Award. Hope this helps. Larry
