    Oil Pan Capacity

    Hi Guys, I have two questions this time. Does anyone know if a 1973, 350 c.i.d. motor takes 5 or 6 quarts of oil when changing the oil filter?

    And 2nd: Does anyone know if the GM, ZZ427 Crate Motor have the proper oil pan to fit above the 1967 Corvrtte's steering control arms, etc? This car has power steering. Also, does anyone know if there still are any of the limited addition all aluminum 427 crate motors still available? Thanks.Herb

    Herb -

    You'll find that info in your Owner's Manual, but it's 4 quarts plus one for the filter.

      Hi John, thanks for your reply. For the past 50 years that's what I thought as well. However now when I change the oil with 5-qts, the dip stick shows it's 1 qt. low. I have bought a new dip stick and holding tube thinking that the original one was wrong, but the new one also shows it's one quart low. Herb

        Herb----

        The ZZ427 remains available from GM under GM #19166393 for about $10,250, GM list.

        The ZZ427 uses a Gen VI big block and, consequently, uses a Gen VI oil pan which was never originally used on a Corvette. However, I believe this pan (GM #10240721) will fit a Corvette chassis without problems.

          Herb------

          There are several possibilities:

          1) Someone has installed an incorrect upper dipstick tube. What is the developed length of the tube in your car. "Developed length" is the total length of the tube, as measured along its curvature, from the flange at the block to the upper end of the tube.

          2) Someone has installed an incorrect oil pan. Post a photo and we can confirm;

          3) The old dipstick and the new one you bought are both incorrect for the application. What is the GM part number of the new dipstick you bought?

            Herb, Are you sure the tube is fully seated in the block?
