Al, I ended up rebuilding mine as the gears were to worn for any more adjustment. Check your ST-12 there a good section on adjusting the steering gear. My understanding is that if you look at the lash adjustment screw and it is screwed all the way in, i.e. no threads left to screw in any more, then the box will need to be rebuilt. If you can still adjust the lash screw inward you may be able to take some of the play out.

Maybe one of the experts has a better explanation.

Steering play can be centralized in one area or spread out between several components. Do you have an ST-12 early Corvette service guide? The instructions for taking excess "play" out of the Steering box are well covered there. (Available in NCRS online store) Other areas such as tie rod ends and king pins also can contribute but the box is a good first step

Al, Just remember if you adjust the play out with the steering wheel straight and it's very worn it could bind in an extreme right or left turn.

Hi Al, Chances are you need new gears, very common. As stated before, you can adjust it out in the middle (where it is worn) and it will bind when you turn (where it is not worn as badly). Good luck, Don H.
