When I bought my '84 corvette in 1984, the cruise control only worked once. I was stupid at the time and didn't want the dealership to touch my car to fix it. Then there was a recall regarding the cruise control so I took it in to get it repaired thinking this was the problem all along. It still didn't work. The mechanic sais it was the fault of the gage unit so he ordered a new one. It was months before the unit was available and when it did finally arrive, for some unknown reason, I still didn't take it in for the repair. I just didn't trust the dealership to work on my car. Now it's 28 years and 6,600 miles later and I want to get it fixed. Is there any information or anybody that can make the necessary repair? I wish I still had my original cruise control set up that was installed in the left front of the car instead of the recalled replacement that is above the battery.

Re: non-working cruise control
Perry, In my days at a Chevrolet dealership as a tech I remember the recall, did a few of them. A few things to check is the switch on the directional arm, during the operation of the directionals the tiny wire harness that routes inside the tube of arm tends to break internally from the motion of the directionals. another check is to make sure the switch on brake pedal is working, or clutch pedal if a stick shift. You will need a cheap volt & ohm meter to check the switch and harness. good luck EdNew England chapter member, 63 Convert. 327/340- Chapter/Regional/national Top Flight, 72 coupe- chapter and regional Top Flight.- Top

Re: non-working cruise control
I checked the switch and harness as you suggested and both appear to be good. The cruise control stopped working on the first or second day after I purchased the car new so I think it is probably an electronic issue, probably with the digital dash, as the tech suggested. Any other ideas? Are there rebuilt dash clusters available or can I send mine to a reputable repair shop to have it tested/repaired. Any recommendations?- Top
