    Shock Absorber Question

I am trying to move up from 2nd Flight on my '65. The shocks on the car were some old worn out Delco Pleasureizers. I have bought some Delco replacements from Corvette Central. They are painted black. The original shocks were a gray color. Does it aid in the judging to paint these shocks? If so which vendor has the best matching color? Tks for any advice.

Yes, at least match the grey color of the originals.

      Mike,

Agree with Bill. Paint them the "dove grey" that they should be. If you do a search of the archives, I am sure the best brand etc. will be called out. Sorry, but I don't recall off the top of my head right now.

You might also want to get the appropriate broadcast code stickers to apply after your fresh paint job. Those are available from LIC or Paragon just like the grey paint.

      Good luck
      Rob

Remember that most of your chassis will be judged on the CDCIF method (i.e. if a standard deduction does not apply). The "F" stands for finish. If you have a shock in an incorrect color, it means a 20 percent deduction for that portion (finish) of the originality of your shocks. In other words, paint your shocks the correct gray.

            Mike:

The color varies between gray and blue-gray. Most originals seem to be blue-gray. Quanta and LICS have correct "shock absorber paint". Also a few other suppliers like Corvette Central, Paragon, Zip, or Keen. Use a very fine wire wheel or some fine sandpaper to scuff or remove the black finish.....I used a very fine wire wheel and removed all of the black paint.

Also, if the shocks have some lettering like "Made in Mexico" or Made in China", I would use a bit of "bondo" to cover this. Leave any other lettering and part numbers alone.

Finally, apply the small, white/black stickers to the final painted product. The judging manual calls out the correct ones for the various years. Again, LICS and Paragon (and probably others) sell these. Orient the stickers so they can be seen by the judges.

Correct shock color, correct original stickers, and correct sticker placement are shown in various posts/threads in the archives. Do a search to find.

And finally, use the correct mounting hardware (bolts and rubber bushings and bushing retainers). LICS has excellent reproduction hardware for you to use if you do not have original.

Here's the original rear shocks off my early '65, alongside the original rear spring leaves. There's probably "50 Shades of Grey" out there .

I'm with Larry Mulder and refer to the color as bluish-gray.....no scanner, so If you'd like a photo give me an address.
