Jumper around the resister John. That's what it sounds like. You may not have it wired correctly. -Dan-

Dan how do I do that? hook both ends together? I think the resistor had pinks on both sides, I need to go out to the car and verify.

Wrap 12 or 14 gauge wire around a pencil several times and bypass resistor. If car stays running you have found the problem

You can check for an open ballast by just touching ohmmeter probes to the ballast terminals. The meter should read near zero resistance.

If the ballast is okay, remove the distributor cap and rotate the engine as necessary to ensure the points are closed. Turn the ignition switch "on" and check for voltage at the coil + terminal. If none there is an open somewhere else in the circuit (The cranking ignition circuit bypasses the ballast.), and the two prime suspects are the ignition switch itself, and the connector at the cowl that carries the primary ignition circuit.

Use your sevice manual wiring diagram to trace the circuit and find the open.

always check new heater cores with about 15#-20# of air pressure in a pan full of water before you install them. you can never know what happened in shipping.
