    C2 gauge accuracy ?

    Hello;
    Do Chevrolet documents write about the accuracy of the gauges, in particle 63 - 67 ?
    As I remember Chevrolet personnel told customers;
    "the gas gauge is only accurate within a 1/4 tank" and
    "the ampmeter only is accurate showing positive or negative results"
    as examples of my question.

    I don't remember ever reading this information in print.

    Thank you in advance for your help.
    Ray

    Ray,
    My experience is the "original fuel gauge and sending unit" is as accurate as any today. But replacements of any kind yield reading from anywhere but accurate.

    Amp gauge is not an instrument to give a precise reading. It's intended use is to indicate charge or drain. The magnitude of such drain or charge is not a measurement reading. Only an indication of relationship of alternator with battery.

      As accurate as any Chevrolet? My experience is that Chevrolet can not build a fuel gauge that is accurate, and I have owned Chevrolets from 1954 to 2008. NONE of them had a fuel gauge that I would call anywhere near accurate. In fairness the 2008 is better than most, but it broke at 4 years and 39K miles.

        Sounds about like my experience with Chevy gas gauges. My driver, a 2000 Impala, currently has a gauge with a mind of it's own. It went bonkers about 6 months ago. It will read accurate when you first put the key in and go to ON, providing you don't jiggle the car too much getting in. Once you start to move it reads all over the spectrum. The dealer says it is the sending unit in the tank, but the repair would cost more than the car's bluebook, so I go by mileage to gauge my next fill.

        My 63 gives me a steady reading, but doesn't like to be too accurate either. Good thing we have big gas fillers to gauge by eye.

        My first car was a 50 Chevy coupe that I changed to 12 volts to complement the 3 different Chevy V8's I had in it during my ownership. I used a toggle switch to switch on the power to it just long enough to get a reading. Even at that, I ran out of gas two or three times as it had a small tank a very thirsty engines w/ either 3 duces, dual 4's or my last combo 58 Fuelie.

          Stu,
          It sounds like you are having more fun putting your foot into it and not paying any attention to the gas gauge. Horse power and multi carbs is not conducive to good gas mileage. I sometimes ask myself were did all that gas go?.............. It does get a bit costly after a couple tanks full do to spirited driving. But what the hell ya only go around once.

            The C10/C1500 may be the worst. You could never trust a C10 and my 95 Cheyenne is dry at the 1/4 tank reading on the gauge. I have a 2000 and a 2002 Volvo V40, and they're dead on. My daily driver is a 2008 Impala, and it's relatively accurate, but nothing like the Volvos.
